BoxByte - Hardcore Arcade

Postby ikarus » Fri Sep 02, 2011 3:51 pm

BoxByte is my first game but something I'm really proud of and put lots of work into. It almost plays similar to Geometry Wars but then is something else entirely. I tried to make a simple addictive arcade like game that tries to have a new gameplay mechanic. Avoid, but also catch. In a sense it's almost like mix between action/puzzler together a bit as there are a lot of times where it's extremely tense, but there's strategy involved as well too. Play it and let me know what you think, make sure to read the how-to in the main menu. By the way, my computer isn't really beefy enough to take a video of the game play, if anyone posts some footage for my that I'll use I'll make sure to add you to the credits of the final game^^

----------------Demo Release 2--------------------
Well it looks like I just slipped in my self-set deadline for for 24th-25th! Had some last minute leveling bugs and balance issues with powerups and the other new features. I'm getting together a giant package for everyone like before right now. But before that, I've heard everyone's woes with file size. So while I'm putting together the giant package I'll upload some stand alone executables for resolution 1027x768 windowed and non, for windows and linux. Now the updates!!!

New Features:
-BigBytes, are now included! There's great skill needed to destroy these beasts! They're smart too, they'll make sure to avoid you if you're the same color as them, but go in for the kill when they see a vulnerability. Watch out if more than one spawn since they'll work together! They'll spawn randomly and at different levels depending on the difficulty.
-Stun attack, a way to protect yourself from enemies as a last resort! The enemy will be incapacitated for a few seconds, hopefully that will give you the time you need. But you can only use it so often, so be careful with your timing. (explained in How-To)
-New Powerups, including the grand Graviton! If you get this, it gives you a gravitational pull! Bytes of your color will move towards you and revolve around you, opening them up for the kill! But be careful, you cannot stun in this state so watch for BigBytes. Also there's a wave-up powerup that will increase the number of waves by one, for those that need the most points!
-Score Multiplier, the new score multiplier rewards you for getting Bytes of the same color in a row, each point you get will be multiplied by this. (Especially useful for BigBytes which normally give you +5 and whose color won't effect your multiplier)
-Newer Retro Look, redesign of the main graphics including Box and the Bytes to look even more retro. Also new graphical effects and sound effects.
-Completion Plus, once you complete the demo on Normal or Extreme it'll unlock a feature to spawn any enemy or powerup, for the curious who want to experiment with the Graviton and BibBytes. Keys F1-F6, they will spawn 200 points above Box. If you want to remove this, delete the user.dat it'll make when the game is done.

All in all the core gameplay is very much still there, but I hope the newer features will give layers to it, and make it be more of the killer game that I'm working hard to create. Something professional that will be competitive. I love feedback by the way, feedback me^-^

*waits for download to finish* Wow, looks good, and *just* 161.5 MB? Wow, that's *not* big.

:/ yeah I know. Wish there was a better way to support multiple resolutions, I have many friends with many resolutions,at least it was better than my original idea lol->(have executable for 6 resolutions and for every os)
At least now I got all the resolutions as dat files and have one executable starter that has you select your resolution and loads the right dat file, then it saves your choice so you never have to repick. I got that one lone starter exported to all the OSs. lol trust me, this is much simpler than the alternative. XD

Now that I actually played it, I'd say this is amazing! (Still challenging though xP, didn't get past level 1 on easy lol)
But I do wish there was a windowed version too(Makes it easier to record)
Oh, a pause button would be good to have(I know esc opens a menu asking if you want to quit, but the game isn't paused)

*Happy Dance*
I thought about a windowed version but didn't want to add more to the already large file size. And yeah, it's made to be extremely challenging. One of those games you yell at but can't stop. And trust me you can get extremely good, now after playing it so long I can last to the fourth level on extreme lol. Before long you'll be pulling off crazy moves like riding the wall and bouncing off to slide in between two reds to get a blue lol

Haha yeah, you just can't stop
And to avoid making the file size bigger, why not just make the 800x600 version windowed?

That's a good idea, but I'll do that later cause it took like two hours to upload this lol XD. And by the way, hope you get to the 4th level cause that'll really show you what I got planned for level design in the final game ;)

Actually no lol, I'm not much musically gifted lol. I'm more into art, game design, and programming. The music is the only thing I didn't make, I found a lot of the sound effects and edited them, don't know if that counts lol. The music is actually DST's, which is awesome because it fits so perfectly in the game. If you look at the credits I've credited him^^

REALLY annoying bug found: When crashing into the wall, there is a small chance you end up outside the world, with no chance of getting back in

Yeah I know, been tinkering with physical response to fix it, keep moving in a random direction and you should teleport back in, might take a sec for the view to catch back up with you though.

[edit]
Not sure what else I can do. One neat little thing though, the borders are actually like 80 pixels wide 10px are red and 70px are black. I did that to hopefully stop it from happening but I guess it didn't fix it completely.

Just saw that, it is paused. The bytes won't hurt you but everything else is paused I swear! Powerups won't spawn and mines freeze. I had issues with only some bytes actually pausing, I guess because there's so many. It's weird, it's a draw script that checks the freeze but when I have the pauseOn global true all but like two or three bytes would ever freeze... Not sure what to do about that?

By the way, anyone have any ideas on simulating a bounce without using physical response. I was thinking basing it off of the angle but it didn't work as good as physical response did :/

That's a pretty good idea with the shield!Should of thought of that lol
I tried more sound effects but it was hard because it interfered with the awesome music, thank you DST! I'll try to find something that won't interfere
