Max mapsize 8190 pixels?

Postby Omulexi » Fri Aug 17, 2012 2:22 am

Just was wondering, I was making an attempt of placing my tiles in a PNG File for the tiles that dont move kinda like a canvas to be able to place animated tiles on top of it. The overworld map is comprised of 32x32 tiles and 256 tiles wide by 256 tiles long. Which is 8192. This was how the Ultima V RPG by origin was built in 1988. I ran into the fact the limitation is 8190 which wasnt a problem until I got thinking, I still have to make individual Town maps and dungeon maps. So it doesnt look like ill have enough space to recreate a game with an "Ultima" feel to it. Is there anything im missing here. I just dont wanna get too far to run into limitations on the programming side due to map space constraints. Any help would be great thx.

Is there a problem with creating the background tile layer using gE's tile system? I mentioned this to you before, and from your post here, it sounds like it would work. As long as you make a tile map, the tile editor allows any sized map.

there is a bit of a problem. Something is up with the Snap to grid. I set it at 32 and still sometimes it messes up. I try disabling it and try again and just get frustrated...How do you get into the tile editor...or hasnt it been impletemented yet? ive been looking but can seem to find it. so in essence, making a tile map, will allow me to go past 8190 pixels then? I take it that was just the limitation on the actor size not the map size?

To just re-cap. The snap is a little flaky at times. It will sometimes snap at half the grid and such. and if you take it off snap move the tile a little then snap to grid again, it will stay where it is and just snap in that position. I love the program btw. I know its all a work in progress. Perhaps make a Bar at the bottom kinda like what photoshop does to tell you what to do when you press the shift, Ctrl or alt keys. Just an idea. Im not being critical but more docs would be nice maybe i can help as well like others have. ive been reading but perhaps ive missed something here and there.

The snap to can get messed up at times. There is another form of snap alignment, by pressing left shift. Both of them tend to latch onto the sides of the editor, as well as it latches onto other actors (not just the actor itself), but when you get used to it, it isn't that bad. gE uses a hint system to explain what things do (hover over it and some text should popup), but in the case of the tile editor, it is explained on the tile popup. This could be improved, and I'll look into it.

And yes, more documentation has always been a goal, but with so few people working on it, we haven't gotten very far. I'll probably resume answering questions by adding to the wiki, which should slowly help fix that problem.

To access the tile editor, add your tiled animation to the actor, and click the button [Tile]. From there it brings up the tile editor dialog like I've mentioned (has the controls on it). You want to use single tile, and you should be able to create your tiled map without running into any size restrictions.

OH ok on the tile editor, I've done that...You had me confused that it was an actual "Editor" with brushes and colors and such. I got to that and was able to tile the map. Just had the snap problem was all. Just getting used to the verbiage lol. One thing that could be mentioned is that when you tile like that, animations arent used. Thanks for the heads up. Nice job btw. Now I can resume the project. I just wanted to clear up a few things before I go too far. thanks.

Ah, yeah. I was working on a tile creator before I went on vacation. With it you can display the actual tiled version of it, as well as zoom in and out. Since I was making it in gE, it would only export to bmp, but still it is a step up from other things I've come across. It might be too late for your project, but I'll see if I can get it finished and posted sometime soon.

Yeah that would be great. Its not too late for my project. I spent the majority of the time working on water tiles and transitional deep water to shallow water tiles. I can still make great use of it if you were to finish it. I can just make them into png files from bmp anyway in photoshop. Since im new to game editor, ill see what i can do to make some documentation coming from a newbie. Thanks again for all the help and correspondance.
