Minim - minimalistic exploration platformer

Postby GrimmDingo » Thu Jul 14, 2011 7:26 pm

Started working on a platformer side project today, always wanted to do a minimalistic game and have always had a thing for silhouettes, it'll probably be relatively short, got the walk cycle animation and walk movement, i'm working on the jumping gravity and collision, wouldn't mind collaborating with someone if anyones interested?

~~Updated~~
redesigned character, and put more effort into his animation, and even named him as you can clearly see :P
been overhauling the tileset, was thinking coloured props in foreground and silhouettes behind, (zdepth relative to the player, what he passes behind and in front of, silhouettes behind him and coloured in front of him)
what's you're opinion on the coloured bits? Should i go back to strictly silhouettes?
The blue thing on the floor is basically a checkpoint, i've mainly been doing new graphics and modifications, and making the bitmap font.

The game is a exploration platformer, the gameplay will consist of exploring of course, and progress into areas will be hindered by puzzles/obstacles overcome with new abilities, there will be some backtracking. There will be themed areas etc etc

what do you guys/gals think?

I'm interested! Though I'm not good at level design or drawing. Mostly just decent at coding and ideas so that's all I could really contribute. I really like your art style, so working with it (and you for that matter) would be great fun! :) Platformers are about the only thing I've really spent a ton of time to learn in GE (aka my favorite kind of game). Other than that a little shmups, RTS, and rpg. But I'm sure you don't want to hear a ton about all that.

Plus I like to take time to get away from my projects (easier to come back to things when you get stuck and switching between a couple always makes me work better and faster).
Working on a probably too ambitious project! Wild-west-adventure-RPG-shooter-thing.

glad you find it appealing, if all goes smoothly should have a demo out within a week, hoping collaboration kicks off soon development might speed up substantially, and got some ambitious ideas that i won't be able to implement otherwise.

So in the meanwhile here are some more screens
(btw ignore the errors in the fence, i just pasted it in from a mockup, and didn't notice it had root shaped holes before i got off pc or i would've fixed them, i've got it in my tileset ready to place but didn't have time to)

also a preview of a cast member hehe

e: great, jimmy has just mailed me the updated movements which include jumping, i'll be testing it tomorrow as soon as i can get on pc, i should be able to concentrate on level design for the first zone, so one step closer to a demo ^^

Well this update is a little overdue,
but the demo has been postponed due to issues with game editor, crashing and when testing within the editor chronic lag, exported to exe it runs at a smooth and constant 60 fps, and runs relatively well even on an aging laptop.

Minim is still in development, it's just ground to a crawl for now, a demo will be released when we've implemented certain features, but in the meantime partly to avoid abandonment from the frustration of the engine, we've started another project. And hope the same issues don't arise lol

Here are some updated screenshots,

Uhh what!?!

What he mean is that if this screenshot is not what he think you think it is, it's not what you think it is.
Man, that don't make any sense at all
