Here is a question, if I make a game and am giving it away for free do I still need the license?
also is there something that will appear in my game that would link back to game editor? or even advertise game editor.

Game Editor is 100 percent open source software released under the the GPL v3 terms. If your game is also 100 percent open source and licensed under GPL v3, then you never have to pay us for the licenses. Just get the source code and have fun!

Pretty much if you aren't selling your game, you don't need to buy a license. And all exports from gE have a splash screen.
