I get very little money from ad revenue from the two games I have on GameJolt; Abandoned Machine and Dimension 55355.

Sonic, your dad is probably concerned that your focusing too much on gE and not doing your school work. It's just that any half decent dad would be concerned if they felt their kid was abandoning their school stuff, regardless of whether it's true or not. He means the best for you. I also think that it's cool that you have a good relationship with him. Your lucky, I don't have a good one with mine.

Some people don't see the difference between game playing from game making (not that it needs to be separated). They don't realise that anyone can play a game but to make one you need to be multi-discipled in everything from story-telling, sound technician, muscian, artist, businessman, mathematician and endless list of skills. Anyone of these is a good for a future profession. You already know this. These things come about after spending alot of time, patience, practice and research. Your doing everything that your doing at school already: English, Math, Science, Design and much more. You just need to show yourself that gE can help you with your school stuff.

I've got a challenge for you. CAN YOU MEET IT? ARE YOU BIG ENOUGH FOR THE CHALLENGE?

Prove that not only are you not wasting your time but you can also use gE to help you in your school work. gE is not just for making games. You can make school stuff to help with your studies. And if you meet my challenage I bet you'll realise that you'll meet the same difficulties designing an educational game/app as making a game.

Hey. Why not use gE to make revision stuff to help you in your school exam stuff (most of the stuff that your going to develop you'll probably end up using in a future game anyway)? Even, a simple quizz for all the revision questions. Make a hangman version of it or something more imaginative. If your gonna spend 3 months away from gE on revision, why not do revision on gE for 3 months? Is that really so bad and less fun than doing revision without gE?

Turn a wrongly preceived negative into a positive.

Give me a list of school topics you have to do for your exams on this thread and I'll see what I can come up with for revision ideas in gE (hopefully, with help from others on the forums too).

If you want to make money, go to college and study game design, but then you wont be able to design the games you -want- to design. You'll be working for someone else and making THEIR games.

I agree. I have my life all planned out. Since I'm only a kid I want to sell games now and I'll have enough money for my own company.

Sonic, sorry for being mad at you earlier, but you should have told us that right off the bat. We could have helped. I agree that your dad is good for caring, but it is your future, and we are the next generation of future leaders of the world. Don't expect too much money off of GE, I hope to get money, but I don't expect to get money. Also, promise him that you will reduce your time a bit if you study more, or do your work more.

Wow! You guys are around 14? I feel old! I'm 29! Let me tell you my story and then give you some unsolicited advice that I wish I knew when I was younger. Maybe sonic's dad will be okay with him using Game Editor within reasonable limits if he understands what I'm about to tell you.

I never had a computer until I was 15 and didn't even know how to use one before that. The only time I ever learnt to do anything on a computer is when I found it interesting. I studied electronics for 6 years and never once paid any attention to my studies beyond what I needed to pass the exam. But I learnt how to design and make my own electronic circuits (often unrelated to my college syllabus) because I found it fun. I barely passed my exams but aced all the projects where we actually had to design and build something. What I did not know then is that the best way to make someone learn something is to make the learning process interesting. People don't learn in classrooms - they study there and forget later. People learn best while "doing" and they are likely to do something consistently and whole heatedly only if they enjoy it.

You see, your father is probably worried that you're wasting your time with something related to gaming, which, in his eyes, will not help you achieve success in life. However, what he may not see is the REAL value in what you are doing. Firstly, you are currently doing willingly and happily what most parents and teachers struggle to get students to do. By learning to develop your own games, you will be familiar with advanced programming even before you're out of school. This isn't about a particular programming language, tool or what they're used for. What this really is about, is developing the ability to think, the ability to apply concepts, to solve difficult problems, to face challenges and to learn a lot of life's lessons along the way while having fun doing it all. What you are doing now is gaining an edge for later on in life. What you do with GE code now won't get you grades this year, but they'll help you score later on in life when it matters. Even if you don't take up a real coding job, what you REALLY take with you is the ability to reason logically, solve problems and apply your mind in a constructive and intellectual manner. These are things that are not "taught" in school or college. They're normally only learnt outside the classroom, often later in one's life. So when your father laughs when you tell him you could make money using Game Editor, please help him understand that this isn't about making a few bucks by selling a self-made computer game. This is about investing in a broader set of skills in the formative years of your life that have the potential to benefit you in the future.

Don't obsess with Game Editor or spend all your time on it. Don't ignore school (it really is important as well). But stick with the process of learning by "doing" so far as your schedule permits you to. This isn't about gaming, this isn't about C programming and most certainly, this is not about a specific tool or set of knowledge. Computer languages change, the purpose of programming changes and the tools and technologies change. However, the ability to think, reason, analyze and troubleshoot does not. These are the only things that will last you through the majority of your life, no matter what you choose to do in the future. Good luck and all the best!
