so after reading some rpg forums and such i have come across this common mantra of "dont try to make your first rpg a really huge game, because you will most likely not complete it", yadda yadda yadda, something to that effect.
despite all warnings, i have begun diving head first into developing a multi-player action rpg set in a very modern day earth like planet. there will be a lot of fairly common game mechanics involved, stats, classes, skills, strategy options, etc. even a "alliance" setting (good, neutral, evil). they will be slightly complex systems, disguised by a very friendly and simple player interface. i have spent a lot of time in my life playing video games, especially rpgs. i consider myself a connoisseur of sorts really. i have to say earthbound is a game very dear to my heart, it has inspired me greatly. i would be lying if i said it didnt. though this project will certainly be a game completely unique unto itself, expect to see some elements from all of your favorite rpgs, most notably, earthbound/ mother series, secret of mana/ seiken denetsu 3, zelda series, alcahest, star ocean series, shadowrun, alundra, and some even from more modern games like fallout 3, elder scrolls series, etc even other non rpg games like grand theft auto, zombies ate my neighbors, etc.
what to expect;
-huge towns, huge world. and when i say huge, i would say the first town is about 4 times the size of onett in earthbound if that gives you any frame of reference, possibly even larger, and there will be somewhere in between 40-60 large areas to explore.
- 1-4 simultaneous playable characters on screen/ (with 6 - 8 available characters to choose from, dependent upon chosen storyline path)
- multitude of different types of items, shops, markets, restaurants, etc,
- in game time system with nights/days/weeks and even seasons
- choices are a major aspect of the game
- ability to create items, hunt, fish, cook etc.
- "laws" that the characters must follow or risk being fined or taken to jail (assaulting npcs etc)
- a college like place where you choose classes and professions for your characters
- classes based on modern day professions, such as a doctor, etc.
i have been an artist for all of my life, and im very familiar with graphic design software. so, having both the vision to imagine and ability to bring the idea to life is an advantage in my opinion, and i am quite determined to make not only the art but the gameplay as well come to life the way it is envisioned in my mind.
i am about %20-30 done with the first town i mentioned, though i have been working on many other things (characters, gameplay/ storyline ideas, etc) and things ARE moving fairly quickly. i dont want to give out too many details, and the project doesnt have a name at this point but i will post a teaser image (note that anything, characters, art, maps, are subject to change until later dates) i will keep you guys updated, but i wont go showing too much now!
