Low framerates

Postby duracel92 » Sun Apr 16, 2006 1:12 am

I have low frames on large games made on game-editor, especially RPG games I was wonder if anyone else get the same.

I tried the same game on 3 different computers with the following specs and outcomes:

CPU 1:

1.6GHZ, 512mb ram, 2GB page file , ati radeon 9600 pro
-Poor Frame rate

CPU 2:
2.0GHZ, 512mb ram, 2GB page file,Nvadia GeForce 5500 FX
-intolerable Frame rate

CPU 3:
2.0GHZ, 1GB ram, 7GB page file, ati radeon 9900 pro *i think*
-fair frame rate, 1 frame missed every 1.5 secs.

This got me wondering, what specs. of CPU, e.g. graphics cards and processors are best...?

Please post your specs and if you get bad frame-rates please, i'd like to know if its my CPU or just games like them that slow me down.

Also, are you making all your objects so they dont 'Recieve events even if out of vision'?

I do have frame rate issues in Firetop Mountain, im considering not going any further with it :(

Anyone else have any good tips for improving frame rates?

Remove formula calculations from the draw events.

Precompute formulas, store them in arrays, and look them up when you need them.

For those not in the know, my upcoming game project Battlestar: Fate of the Galactic Commonwealth, has been put on an indefinite hold due to poor framerates in the game. I've been trying my hardest to keep the framerate up on a standard 400MHz Pocket PC device, but it always gets to a point where it just goes south. Starts off beautifully at 29 fps with music, then with all the effects, objects and AI, it can get down to 5! Also, with a game like Enslave that recently got released, I had to rethink the game concept to where it would be either competitive or unique in its own right. I even dared thinking to expand it into a full-blown adventure title, as the space combat just being one type of game sequence, with other modules that are totally different but just as challenging.

With yet another child on the way, a second job coming up, becoming a Contributing Editor on PPCT, and selling and moving to a new home this year, GE game development had unfortunately been on the backburner. I also moved to a Treo 700w with 240x240 screen, so when I get back to GE, I'll be concentrating on this screen resolution while providing upward support to 320x240 and higher from there.

On my current project, normally, you get framerates of about 19-30, which is good, but when the view moves, or when there are a lot of shots on the screen at once, it slows to about 12-15. I have made it so the view moves fast when you get near the edge of the screen, so the view is moving for as short a time os possible, but are there any other things I could try?

on my current computer, *CPU 3* i get 100+ fps on single player games on average, and it can vary from 200fps to 40fps on an online game. except games made with GE, it maybe because the games i was playing on had infinate actors on them?

GE is limited to fps under options, I believe.
