2D ANIMATION program

Postby zygoth » Tue Feb 10, 2009 6:29 pm

There are plenty of programs like Gimp and Inkscape that can be used for single images, but is there any program similar to anim8or that will allow me to choose a beginning frame and an end frame and have the program fill in the middle? Does Gimp already have this function and I just can't find it? feral made something like what I want but I don't think he ever finished it. Do you guys just make sprites one at a time?

Well, I do. There are some high sophisticated 3D animation softwares which do that kind of thing. But they're not free (as far as I know) and they're designed to export your work to movies, not sprites/gif animations (those are only the ones I know about). I dunno, d-soldier used to use lightwave. It would probably do that, but it's kinda expensive.

I guess you're talking about tweening (the term from flash) or 'morphing'.

http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php ... _animation

This is a good list to start with.

I make animations in inkscape, one by one, but i think they can be scripted too.
Now that i see this list, i'm going to check out some of the programs on it.
It's easier to be clever than it is to be kind.

Thanks a lot, I will check these out. by the way, what do you think about a sticky thread that has all these resources listed? for music, sound, animation, etc. I think it would be really helpful to new and old users. Makslane is the only one that can do that, right? We should get together and make a big list.

For creating characters, and tiles, use TileStudio. It can create any character and align them perfectl for you. It can also import tiles from a screenshot of a game.

Hi zygoth,
Yes, There are plenty of free 2D software are there in the market. I would suggest 2D Animation Software of Adobe. You can get the free trial version of this software from the Adobe site.

I use Paint.NET for most things, it's really speedy, I just sort of scribble and then correct it :P

My favorite for spriting is Allegro. It's geared to making games and is very user friendly. It's great for making things tileable, and also has frames and onion skins for animation

Another good one is Anime Studio. It's very speedy and intuitive. It's mainly based in vectors and bones, so you can draw your thing once, and then bend it however you want. You can do everything in AS, or just do an outline and then pixel over it with something else

I also use an old version of Flash MX I got cheap sometimes. It auto-smooths your lines, so it's good for sketching or getting a rough to draw pixels over. It's also really good for rotoscoping

I used to use paint.net but the way the program worked was not too user friendly.........It made pretty uneven lines so quality was a problem, I moved from that to OpenCanvas, that solved the lines problem and has a great control by moving the canvas with middle mouse click, and then I took a step one better and now use Easy Paint Tool SAI, it has excellent line quality and is very useful for various drawings, I also use Photoshop for various effects and whatnot.

As for actual animation, Good'ol flash mx pro 2004 is what i'm currently using, it can easily make frame-to-frame animations and of course if you learn how to use flash you can make flash animations

For these programs, if you have no morals against getting a free copy for personal use, you could use torrents

I'm not sure what you mean by uneven lines, maybe turn off anti-aliasing? Anyway, Paint.net is great for me :)

I've never heard of Open Canvas or that other one, I'm going to try them out :)

And yes, Flash MX pro 2004 does all you need!
