Too small or too big?

Talk about making games.

Too small or too big?

Postby duracel92 » Tue May 30, 2006 8:41 pm

On my current project, an RPG game infact, I was wondering..

Is my game to large I feel, not in megabyte size because thats only 2.34 meg, and decreasing..
While my game actually increases in size funnily enough.

On the grid it spans from the coordinates 0,0 to 20608,23744 downwards (not including any inifinate actors - well at the cross section of 2) and from 0,0 to -15776,-9184 upwards... (at a cross section of two inifinte actors)

It worked out for me at about 1,198,052,338 different pixels (probably wrong? bah! who cares?)

That size just fits on to a 1280 by 980 without including the task bar bit at the bottom, just GE. (zoomed out to the maximum!!!)

Is this too big?? Or too small? considering it is an RPG and they usually are big...

It depends if you are making a PC or PPC game and game resolution.
But anyway it's impresive you had the nerve to take it to that size.
Why do i always get stuck?

With that resolution i think its pretty big, you should get 30+ hours of play time, then again it all depends on gameplay. Congrats man for making it that far.

Would you post a little screen shot, so we can see what your game looks like?
I am also making an RPG right now, and would like to steal some ideas

Well... I will, but theres nothing much worth stealing at the moment, I'm going to be designing first then, im going sit on and work on paper to think of an intresting storyline, with plenty of twists and turns in it. You might think its a bad idea, I guess not many have tried it before, so it looks like I'm one of them...

Actualy im doing something similar.
Im now making the functions that will run my game like useItem(); and such. And then when i have a complete "engine" i will start designing. It's better this way because many times i find that the grafics i made don't fit the game style.

And also, what is your rpg about? I was thinking about mixing in aspects of several different games.

I was thinking maybe setting the game in 3 separate chapters.

A begining chapter where the map looks like a perfect world where you get used the game, a few tutorials here and there...

Then the second chapter making the game like every game, where it goes wrong.

And then the third chapter, where you attempt to fix what happened in chapter 2. Like most other games I'm thinking about leaving a little bit of a cliff-hanger and making a short sequel/expansion finishing the game completely.

And also, I'm trying to think of a mini-game, where people can unlock items, maybe for a multi-player mode - but that feels out of my reach for the moment... -Any ideas?

I dont have a story yet so i can't say.
I think that mini games would be done easiest by making them in separate files and loading them when needed. That way you dont have masses of variables to confuse you and you dont have to disable "hundreds" of events.

I finally made a picture, there isnt much there at the moment, since i haven't been able to make the game.... but I guess I did say I would show it to you... Oh I have chopped off a lot the empty or "to be designed on" area so it isnt as big as I say it is...
