Hmm hopefully GE will get the much wanted and needed upgrades.

As for the GM forum, and tutorials, I did look at them and I did ask questions for help, however I found that they took a long time to reply and when they did reply, the answers were very short and not very helpful in solving my problem.
And after a few responds back and forth if the person still dose not understand, people stop helping and that’s that. Your stuck in the mud.

I have only had GE for a while and have got so much help in creating my game its unreal! And the help you get here is superb, you get real working examples to apply to your problem. And that’s what’s so good about it. I am working on my game, section by section learning as I go along and its been fun, with GM it was more frustrating then fun most of the time. I think with GM you need to have very good programming skills and very good math skills to. I can figure out how the programming works in time, but the math is where I need a lot of help in and At GM I know that it would be like trying to get blood out of a stone.

Don’t take this the wrong way, Im not saying GM is **** , you need a lot more patients with it. And if you are a wizz in programming, then it’s the tool for you.

I'm not taking any of this negatively, obviously you had a hard time regarding getting off the ground with GM. I'm not one to criticize anybody's choice of programming or game making tools, GE has some very nice points in it's favor over GM. (and vice versa)

However, I am concerned with your ultimate goal here. I could be wrong, but I very highly doubt that Game Editor will be able to do what you need to set up a multiplayer server anytime soon. It could take years.

People's experience with the GM forum differ. Getting attention paid to your posts can be a matter of minor details like the way you phrase something. I know it can be frustrating.

But I can tell you that in order to use GM you don't need to know a lot of math or be a really good programmer. I guess any system can seem really complicated before you learn it.

I think you should continue to use Game Editor because it's an excellent system to learn... but I think you should also try to become proficient at Game Maker because it can do a lot of very useful things. If you need private help I'll be happy to give you some pointers.

Why doesn't Makslane reply in these kind of subjects, because I think he would be one of the best at answering these questions... :?:

It would be nice to know his plans...

But he probably doesn't want to be constantly pestered by people asking "When are you going to come out with THIS feature??"

Hi Guys,

I couldn't resist adding my 2 cents.

The GM vs GE topic does arrise from time to time in this forum. Many people feel quite strongly regarding their choice of programming environment. Obviously, I am a GE fan. The reason I use it is that it will do what I want it to do. Namely, it will create programs for the PPC, Windows, and Linux platforms. The cross platform compatibility is what I am after. I really value that feature.

I am, hmm, well, a lousy programmer (OK, I admit it) I need the support of a strong forum and, from time to time, the support of a world class programmer like Makslane. That is the other reason that I like GE so much. I value the support that I get here.

Now, if I needed some feature that GE didn't offer, then I would use a program that offered the feature. It is kind of like that old comparison of a carpenter who takes a hammer to do a job that requires a screw driver. That job probably won't turn out so well. You have a much better outcome if you use the right tool for the job.

As far as the updates and changes go for GE or any other program, I have never seen the program creators reveal much prior to the releases. In fact, Makslane has been by far the most forthcoming that I have seen regarding GE's updates. He tells us many of his plans for future editions of GE. I think if would be very hard to say much more because aprogrammer can run into snags that put off release dates. Just look at Vista. People have expected it for at least a year now. In GE's case, I would rather see Makslane not give specifics or dates because then if we don't see the release happen on time or some feature that we were hoping for included, we would be disappointed. Besides, I like a few surprises...
I've learned that I still have a lot to learn.

** Makslane == Genious **

It's nice to hear reasonable talk like this. One thing I've noticed on the Game Maker forum is that there are a lot of GM fanatics who will deny that there's any program that could possibly do as good a job. But then they have a much bigger community too.

The thing is I like exploring all the alternatives. And there's more than just GM and GE. There's also the Games Factory, Cool Basic, BYOND, Sphere, Adventure Game Studio... they all seem like interesting programs to explore.

Hi Parrot, I think you may be right, I am going to carry on learning to use GE and if I ever manage to get my game to the point where I need online gaming functions and GE still don’t have it at that time, Ill go and see if I can duplicate my game in GM. As our friend Just4Fun stated I don’t think it would be wise to use a hammer to do a job that requires a screw driver.

As for your offer to provide personal help in GM, where were you 2 years ago! Lol. hanks for the offer. I might just take you up on it. I still have GM version 6 on my computer, but its been a while since I have even opened that program. How good are you in GM?

I've been using Game Maker for a couple of years now. Perhaps you'd like to see my latest games:

I'm proud of this one, it's gotten pretty good reviews on a few different places that I posted it.

This one is still a work in progress. I'm putting it on hold for now, I'm hoping inspiration will strike me as to ways to make it more exciting to play.

I distributed those games in .exe format, so you don't have to worry about only having a trial version

I'd love to see any games you're working on in GM or GE.

The Great Smiley Migration took me only a few days, but it's gameplay is fairly simple and I had a lot of time. Miner Conflict is more complicated.

I've been playing around with GE, trying to decide what game to make with it. I was thinking of a platformer, but in my version of GE the platform-type movement sometimes comes off very choppily. I can't seem to get a definitive answer as to whether the latest version fixes that or not.
