looking for coder to help with new idea

Postby feral » Sun Jun 08, 2008 12:34 am

guys,

I have a idea for something that will help put gamemaker on the "map" so to speak

nothing huge, but a simple cool tool that other programmers in other game environments will want to download and use (I think)

I would also like to think it would help makslane out, so the condition of helping on this project is that the end result is for promoting GE and Makslane

i need someone who understands basic particle systems ( nothing special just the concept of making fire/smoke/ explosions using many random sprites)

see viewtopic.php?f=6&t=5194&p=34718&hilit=smoke#p34718
or viewtopic.php?f=6&t=3854&p=22321&hilit=smoke#p22321
or one of the many fireworks demos

and more importantly someone who understand alpha blending.

I would like to do a quick simple demo of the idea for the ge board, an then invite others in to help once they get the idea.. it shouldn't take more then a few hours to do a prototype..

PM me if your interested and i will give you a rundown..

I would do it myself, but it needs slightly better skills then I currently have, and besides i am stuck in the middle of several other demos i promised..

cheers

ok still no reply :(

i will try to do a demo myself hopefully..

but to expend on the idea in case someone does want to help or advise,

the idea is to create particle effects like explosions smoke fireworks etc, but instead of running them real time, run them out as individual frames, onto a canvas sheet that can the be saved in TGA format.

This would make "sprite sheets" of particle driven effects that can be used by anyone even beginners or people using other applications - and being prerendered means saving CPU time...

the end result i would hope, is a menu driven front end that allows you to select desired effect ( explosion type or smoke type, lightning etc ) the chose colors/ and additional parameters such as size shape etc etc while looking at a live preview screen. then select number of frames required etc and output as a prerendered sprite sheet with transparency.

as a group effort i was then thinking anyone could then prod\uce their own effects (or more then 1) that gets added to the "library" of effects that can be selected.

eventually we would have a product that could be given away with legal copies of GE, and or a web site with librarys of prerendered free sprites but with some heavy advertising for GE.. the sprites would also be suitable (gif versions ) for web pages etc

in other words our very own version of this

anyone like the idea ? or is someone already working on their own and I am stepping ll over it .. if so sorry..

The idea is very good, but the major problem is drawing animations onto a canvas realtime, it takes enormous cpu power... I've tried doing animation stuff with my 24bit bmp loader and got my cpu usage up to 50% or more doing very simple things... Just thought you might want to consider this... sorry...

sorry pyro , i probably didn't explain it well..

the idea is that no matter how long it takes to draw the frames.. they can then be exported to a sprite sheet that can be used in real time ( normal animations) in any game with no CPU hit at all..

oh! makes sense now! I'd help, but the problem is I'm going to boot camp in 4 days for a total of 6 weeks (military life sometimes...), so I'm not going to be available whatsoever for a big chunk of the summer. I hope someone does offer you a hand though! Good luck in your quest.

Here are some demos that will slow down your machine.

In the turbine sim i was faced with an interesting problem; If air molecules collide with each other, then you have air pressure but it can't go over 1 atmosphere. If they don't collide, they simple pile up, wasting cpu and there's no air pressure at all.

So collision it is!

Of course, a real successful method is all math, no collisions. But that requires thinking :P
