1024 by 768 is a good size, which most monitors can do. Bigger is better, of course, but many people wouldn't have a larger monitor. Sometimes, your game might require a different proportion, or something like that. My current project uses 600 by 768. For pocket pcs, you will of course have to use a supported size. Games where you can change resolution are good, but GE doesn't support that (yet).
