Better than Game Maker?

Postby chubz » Wed May 09, 2007 5:09 am

Hello guys, new member here!

I apologize to make a comparison between Game Editor and Game Maker, but if Game Editor is a better choice, could you please list some examples?

Also, just to clarify things, I'm a somewhat experienced Game Maker user (still no good at coding) but I'm interested in finding another easy-to-use/learn but powerful game creation tool. I'm currently interested in making a Mario-like game but I'm not sure if I should use this or Game Maker!

Finally, I have just a few questions about Game Editor:
- Can you make good platformer games?
- How easy is it to learn?
- Is there still plenty of potential when not coding/scripting?
- How fully-featured is the demo version? (Game Maker's free version is quite full-featured)

With that said, sorry to pester you with these questions - Thank you for your time!

We get these questions fairly often, but I would be happy to answer you.

- Can you make good platformer games?

Yup. Its quite intuitive in that regard.

- How easy is it to learn?

A couple hours of watching the tutorials that are built in and some experimenting will teach you the basics.

- Is there still plenty of potential when not coding/scripting?

I like scripting myself, but yes, some people can prototype a simple game in 1/2 hour. Sgt Sparky is one. You'll find that a good game can be made with most of the click and point features, and some light scripting.

- How fully-featured is the demo version? (Game Maker's free version is quite full-featured)

A very good question. I bought my full version within hours of first trying GE. At the time, you could compile to an executable, but there was a watermark included in the game.

Welcome to the GE forums, regardless of how long you choose to stay. Your thoughtful and polite demeanor will make you a welcome resident here, and I hope that you will stay!

Welcome Chubz!
Yeah, you can make good platformer games.
It's quite easy to learn (after a day you are doing simple games, after 2 months you are very good)
Yeah, the user interface let's you add and preview all the positions and load the graphics for the objects. You can also draw paths 100% visually.
For the last question, you need to ask Makslane; but I think it's just like the real version, but exports only for windows and adds a 'made with game editor' in your ready games.

EDIT:
Fuzzy! Where did you came! :P
I can't die, I already tried

tekdino, I am newer than Jazz-e-bob, but not as new as you and Game-a-Gogo. More than 2 years! What a surprise!

Well i'm pretty much a total noob with GE and I know it looks a little complex at first (kinda looks like Imagine 3 on Amiga), but it is alot easier than you think after a few days playing around with tutorials and stuff, and read the forums if you need help, the ppl here are great.

- Can you make good platformer games?

Easily!

- How easy is it to learn?

I think so, after a few days it will become easier everyday.

- Is there still plenty of potential when not coding/scripting?

Yes for a platformer, but you may need a little scripting, but its very simple on GE, even i'm starting to understand it, use forums for help :)

- How fully-featured is the demo version? (Game Maker's free version is quite full-featured)

I think its a full version, but limited to exporting to Windows .exe format only, and i think it may have a watermark on those .exe's compiled, so perfect if you want to check it out first.

Game Maker

Postby Gamefreq » Thu May 10, 2007 11:26 pm

The Game Maker is easier to use because the game editor requires coding to move stuff(x = x - 1). However, the game editor interface also works for Windows 95 and 98, so I use it more often( I don't have my own XP). It all depends on whether you want functionality ( 8) Game Maker 8) ) or being able to use it for Win 95 & up without much coding (as well as linux and others with full version of game editor).
