animateing sprites

is it possible to make animations in game editor by puting layer upon layer and making it a gif. if so can you please tell me if not can you tell me any good programs that are free or are awesome for making animations.

yes but how do you make animations in game editor. if you cant tell me that or if you just cant do that can you tell me some good free programs to make sprite animations

You can make animations with single images, but you have to name them sequentially. So if you have a bunch of stills that you want to turn into animations, just give them 00, 01, 02, and so on, to their name. But you can also do animations by creating one large image and having gE cut it into frames, but since you are not asking about that, I won't go into it. I personally use the gimp, free and powerful, though some people find it challenging at first. If you stick to the basics then you shouldn't have any problems.

thanks for telling me that its just that i dont really know how to animate sprites that well with gimp but i know how to make some good looking awesome pictures with it. heres an awesome picture i am makeing for a game called grid war

Nicely done. Well you can always make a bunch of still images and name them to make an animation. Animating is something you have to get good at, but essentially you are changing bits of your image to create the movement. So using transparency and layers, it can be pretty easy. Then just save it as a gif.
