I haven't had a lot of time to mess with the editor yet. I'm going to school for the design side of games and I want to learn how to actually make some of my little games. My main question is what programs do I need to be looking for when it comes to the artwork and animations. Any help would be appreciated.

Try graphics gale. It's free and very easy to use. Plus, you can create animations and export them to sprite sheets
