Can I get feedback on these controls?

Postby Hblade » Sat May 10, 2014 12:24 am

So I decided to work on a game again, and I was wondering if someone could tell me if these controls feel playable or not :D?

Arrows to move, Z to Jump.

Features:
Wall Sliding/Jumping and crawling.

First impressions, they're pretty good. I do like the automatic crawling. :)

And you managed to tackle curved surfaces pretty well, (which is tricky).

One gripe I have is that currently if you stand at the base of the wall, he clings to the wall. He probably shouldn't do that until he's off the ground.

Also if you push yourself against a short wall (the one with the rounded edge), he starts humping it.
Probably be a good idea to leave half size walls out of the game :P

But all in all, it's pretty good so far. Not too floaty, and the yvelocity is maintained once you hit the ceiling which is nice. You might want to make a better transition from falling by switching the animation when yvelocity is a higher value (the animations spaz when I slide down the hill).

Also it's god to see you developing again. Welcome back bro. :D

Hello again HBlade!

With purpose to be uncoloured, i won't read the posts above, so i can give my pure opinion = )
Considering the controls, i can't say there is something wrong with them. The main player can climb walls with jumping (which reminds me of spiderman).
- Climb like spiderman
- Jump like sonic
- Look like Super Mario
- Crawl like Indiana Jones
Very influenced game i can say  ..however the controls are good i had a nice feeling in conrolling the player. (is he supposed to fall like that?)
He also can accelerate when colliding with the walls, which makes the speed of falling slower. And on the top side of the map, he spend too much time in the air, while he collided the roof.

Lovely to see you back again HBlade, you missed us. ^^

First of all: thanks for all the tutorials you made. They really helped me a lot :D

I've tried your updated version, and the player moves across the screen in natura l way. It didn't look or feel strange.

My only comment is on the choise of the keys. I have an "azerty" keyboard. That mean that for me the "z" is where you have the "w".
Using both "z" and "x" is not comfortable for me :(
If you use "x" and "c", than my keys are in the same position as yours. :)

Nice of you to change the controls, but ... now they are even worse :?

Here is a comparison of your QWERTY and my AZERTY keyboard (used in french speaking countries):

And here is the QWERTZ used in German speaking countries:

Can you try to find controls that work on all of these?
Or otherwise you should give the player the option to remap the keys. :D

The "b" and "n" keys look like a safe bet.
Or better yet, space and alt.

Either that or make them customizable.

Also the guns have a nice feel to them. :) Good job.

The movement is really good and the controls are very sharp.
Otherwise I think all notable bugs are already mentioned, so there's not much left to say. :P

I double this however:
...or make them (controls) customizable.

Always a good thing to let people choose their own controls, otherwise there will always be someone who doesn't like the control setup.

Cool game mechanics HBlade, I like it! :)

I found the controls a bit awkward though. XD (action keys are right above the movement keys on my keyboard)
