Warning! Noobie at large.

Postby johnno56 » Sun Mar 23, 2008 8:20 am

Hi,

I am new to this game creation stuff, and was wondering if you guys have an area on your forum, just for us? If not, are there any tutorials, other that the ones provided with Game Editor?

Regards

Greetings.

I am interested in most types of games, except for never-ending type games, like World of Warcraft. Platform, Strategy, Shoot em up (2d and 3d), board (checkers etc), card, etc. I know this sounds somewhat vague, but you did ask.

I have downloaded the Moondefender game and tutorial from game-editor.com/tutorials and will pick it to bits to see "what makes it tick". I have noticed that GE uses scripts. Are there any Script Tutorials? What graphic editors are recommended? (I use mspaint, paint.net, Paintshop 7, Photoshop CS2, Gimp with Windows and a variety of others with Linux.

Do you have a list of recommended utilities that can be used with GE? ie: Sound, Video, Flash etc

I have been around long enough to witness the first computer games, the first TV console units (atari etc), the first non pc home computers and the rise of the first pc's to now. I have always enjoyed games of most types and would be more than eager to receive any help in creating them.

I hope this helps.

Regards
J

A great way to start would be to check out the Documentary, it also has a script reference

As for animation tools, anim8or and blender are both good, easy-to-learn 3d programs. I would highly recommend downloading both (and the best part is, they're free!).

Many thanks.

"Freddy": I will download the recommended software as soon as I can.

"Game A Gogo": Your reference to "Documentary" is a little enigmatic. Thank you for researching the "Script Tutorial". But I do not know where to find the "Documentary".

Thank you both for your assistance.

Welcome to Game Editor! You use really good English, and it must've been cool to see technology evolve from simple dots to amazing 3-deminsional things. Whether you are here to stay or just passing through, hope you find what you're looking for! :D

Thank you for the welcome, "Supa-Tails", it is appreciated. I believe that my length of stay will be determined by the depth of my need. As long as I am learning how to use Game-Editor, I will more than likely use all avenues of source material. Included will be this website. For your compliment about my English, I thank you. I cannot, however, take full credit. The teachers that had to endure over four and a half decades of my unwillingness to learn, deserve that honour.

Im an übernoob too! On top of that I'm also foreign.
But I do not know what to make for a game, all what I've tried is too hard. Nor do I want to make the platform game of the tutorial because that's boring.
What should I do??!

Thunderios,

I too am new at this game making stuff, but even at my level of knowledge, I realized that I have to do the "boring" stuff to gain experience and confidence before I can tackle anything that is "interesting". I too want to make games that eye popping. But, at the moment, I do not have the knowledge or skills to do so.

This is a fact of life. You have to crawl before you can walk. Then when you have mastered walking and balance, then you can try to run. You will more than likely fall over a lot, but you will learn to pick yourself up, and try again. That is why we do the "boring" stuff. The acquiring of knowledge is not instant or immediate. It takes time and patience.

Download any samples. Pick them to bits to see how they work. Use the Forum as a source of information and help. Work through the tutorials, over and over and over again. Practice, practice, practice.

Have fun learning.

Regards

I am Dutch in fact, but in Holland we use the word 'über' too sometimes, I learn English German and French at school so I can speak a little of them, but most of the things I know in English, and a gew in French come from the Internet, mostly mmorpg's.

Johnno, you really seem like a wise person to me, so I'd better do what you tell me to do, I suppose.

I don't really know what a shoot'em up is, some kind of 2d shooter? Anyways, I'm going to make a game called Scavenger, where you have to shoot at opjects to get trash from them to build a better car and take over the city. Or should I make something like that as a second game? Well, I start drawing now so you can still stop me if you want to XD
