I used Paint.NET, it's a free alternative to photoshop (And a better alternative to GIMP, but that's just my opinion)

You should learn to search for things. If you just google paint.net, it comes up with the download link. A lot of the time, information you want to know is immediately viewable from a quick search (this is true for google, and if searching gE related questions, the gE search http://game-editor.com/forum/search.php).

As far as I am aware, no you can't handle transparency in microsoft paint. You can however create images that gE will turn the top left pixel (and all pixels of the same color) transparent.

You should try GraphicsGale. It's a free, easy to download, pixel editor. And, it can handle 32bit colors, so you will be able to add transparent backgrounds
