Help (8 directional sprites)

Postby NERDnotGEEK » Mon Sep 05, 2011 5:36 pm

Once again one of my games is held back by my inability to draw :) I want to make a game where the player can move in 8 directions, but after many attempts I cant actually draw the player. I've attached my best efforts and I'm hoping someone can finish them off for me? just walking in all directions is all I need. Many thanks would be given, credits ect ect :) <3

Oh and just in case you didn't know, the guy with the white hair is my attempt :)

Maybe someone can just do one of the diagonal directions for me then? I may be able to get the others done from that :)

If you had some kind of reference model, like something made in blender or something, it might be easier to have a snapshot of each direction you want in the sprite and trace around that. but of course if you don't like to make models, you could have someone take your picture from a balcony and use that as a reference model too. :)

Maybe at some point I'll make a model for you. It really doesn't have to be any more detailed then a stick person, just to give a reference to the different angles. I'm sure it's way easier to trace that to draw freehand. Honestly, your drawings for the front and back didn't look bad. I believe the problem lies in the diagonal directions. If they were a little less flat, they would work great. :D

That would be wonderful :)
I've never been good at drawing, I often just bug my friends that do A level art to draw me stuff when I need it :)

I'm an artist but I'm not much of a pixel artist, I could probably get into it if I tried I just don't really have the patience for it. If I had to do something like that I'd probably break the body up into parts and animate them separately in synfig of ktoon or something, both are free. Synfig is much more complicated than ktoon but more stable.

[edit]
Seems like a challenge, I'll see if I can do a few walk cycles for you, least I can do for you helping me. I'll upload all the files I use too to show you what I did

here ya go, not perfect. I tried with synfig but it tries to blend the pixels, not sure if it would match the rest of your stuff. I made it all with gimp, just moving and rotating layers, then using align to get the sheet right. First I broke each body part down, I included them to show you. I also edited the head a bit because the perspective you had was a bit off. Lastly there's some geds I made to test them moving.

I noticed a problem though when I made the geds that I suspected from the beginning. Your diagonal standing positions that I based this on are a bit off, they're facing slightly too far to the right or left and not up enough. So they'd actually move more to the side instead of moving equally on both axis. You'll notice in the first test ged, where they move more to the side, it looks more natural than the second test ged, where they move the same on each axis. Not too noticeable, but if you're a perfectionist it'll get to you lol.
