Well, it may not be possible to officially play over a network, HOWEVER it IS possible to play a game together on separate computers. Though it can take a lot of planning and thinking to do. You also don't need any other programs for local network games. What you do is make a mapped network drive. You then put the game on that drive. Then on both computers, load the game and play it. What the game does, is it saves anything it needs to a file in the same mapped drive, which will be read by both games, thus allowing network gaming. In order to play over the internet, you do the same thing, but with a VPN such as Hamachi.
