What is a Game Engine?

I heard somewhere that if you finished the engine creating the game will be much easier what is a engine?

Umm I think it is just like the basic structure of the game. Like if you get all of the movement of the main player, the animations, the interactions with the environment (gravity, physical response, activating buttons/switches), and maybe the enemies. To finish that first rather than to just create several levels while adding the fundamentals of a game.

Kind of like how a sequel is way easier to make because you already have the engine figured out, you're basically just editing certain things and adding some new things, rather than creating something from the ground up.

I like to think of an engine as a template for your game. Like what Happy said, I make the main character and all his animations and interactions, etc. Then all that's left is adding in levels and maybe a story :)
