What are your motivations for making computer games ?

Postby digiot » Mon Jul 07, 2014 4:01 pm

To be interested in making computer games, you must be a slightly eccentric
person, even perhaps a nerd/geek.
But there were great masters before you, with ideas and skills, you will
(probably) never reach for.
And even worse, every pixel has been set millions of times, and any idea is
a blatant plagiarism.
What drives you, nethertheless investing your time into such a grazed area,
that's what I'm curious about !

Here are my motivations :

First of all, most of the existing computer games are created for the market,
or are at least suitable for the masses.
Since mainstreaming never was a hobby of mine, I had to dream of great games,
or just trying to make something by myself !

I always loved to produce any things with my own hands, it was never so clean
and easy, than with a keyboard and a screen !

Some stuff wants to leave my brain, I can't seriously perform in the real world...

And last, but not least - the god factor !
You can really feel like god, when you are creating any gameworlds, that's
very fascinating !

And what are yours ?

Cheers !

Yep, that's me. A slightly eccentric person.

I was inspired to start making games of my own after playing some of Nitrome's games, way back in 2006/7 or something.
That's pretty much what drove me into investing my time in this field.

And I chose "Just for fun" because the process of making games can be both fun, but also frustrating, mostly fun though. ;)
Currently: Semi-Active.
Working on: Maybe putting my test games in gamejolt, polishing them a bit, but I still don't know when.

I love making games because of my age :P Although I admit I am trying to use it as a money platform. But I don't see anything wrong with that.

@ mod: Thanks for deleting the fail postings, and all related (parts of) posts !

Some nice games there, super link !
And what aspect of the games was it, getting you hooked ?

@ jonathang: Yeah, you have to work for your fun !

knucklecrunchgames wrote:I love making games because of my age :P...

Your age could only serve as an excuse, but not as a reason for making games !
knucklecrunchgames wrote:Although I admit I am trying to use it as a money platform. But I don't see anything wrong with that.

Really, you don't see it ?
I gave you 3 votes for free, but you didn't find anything more essential in
the list than the money ?
Both, your age, as well as the run for money, will not help you making games !

Cheers !

I am not sure if I have a real reason I just have to create (but kinda want to aswell) so it's basically creative compulsion.

KCG, I've been making game for 5 years and I didn't even earn a cent!
Also, complain about being poor at the age of 12? Really?

Well you really should look into putting ads onto your site. I don't really care if you say making games is a hobby. To me it's both a hobby and a future career

And yes I am complaining about being poor at 13

In case you're missing the point,
MONEY IS NOT EVERYTHING.
Besides, we make money from ad revenue on GameJolt already.
Also, you're 13! How much money could you possibly need??

@ knucklecrunchgames: Making money isn't the problem, you just put the
cart before the horse.
First make professional games, before going into business.
Haven't you noticed all that great free software all around, what do you
want to sell ?
knucklecrunchgames wrote:To me it's both a hobby and a future career

Well, that can be...

@ Turon: That's the most important motivation !

Ok money in the 21 century is eveything. I'm trying to help my parents pay for bills. It's okay for you with plenty of cash.

And I need a lot of money.

Money is not everything. I am everything.
