Adverisement

Postby Kalladdolf » Mon Feb 04, 2008 8:34 pm

would it be considered legal if I advertised for stuff in my game?
I mean, like, if I put a coca-cola can in my game or ikea furniture (without asking the companies for permission first)?
or should I then mention them in the credits? or...? I just wanna be on the safe side =D

also, makslane, is it ok if I use your GE icon in my games as some extra objects (not because I can't make sprites myself, I just need something original)...?

I'm asking all this because a game seems lonely if you just have your own stuff in there. You don't want it to be completely cut-off from the world around.
I think the games are funny where for example you play a completely new freakin' game and suddenly super mario bursts in and beats ya up...
(I know, I take the most absurd examples... )
sorry, bee-ant if you're reading this, I know you don't like long posts.

thanks guys

The problem though, is copyright. I think it may be alright to use sprites and things from other games if you release your game as freeware and give credit to the creators of the graphics from within the game. Hence you must mention that you did not create the graphics yourself and say who did. Some people even frown upon that though.

Kalladdolf, your question is a more difficult one. The safest would be to just leave out any registered trademarks. If you ask permission then it will be alright but they have to reply of course and that's not always easy. It also depends whether you plan to sell the game or whether it's free. I do not think that companies will complain or sue or anything like that if your game is freeware (except maybe if you make fun of their products).

It's tough. Some companies won't mind and others will. The truth is that we are relatively small fry so I do not think that any of the games that we make will be frowned upon if we use little Coca-Cola cans and such in our games. Maybe just for safety reasons add in your credits that for instance Coca-Cola is a registered trademark of blah blah and so forth.

If you want to stay completely safe though then rather stay away or ask for permission.

so, it would stay the same with the product copyright and stuff if I didn't use pics of their products, just imitated them by making it myself?

I'd say it's best to ONLY put things in the games that you have permission for adding. although, I've noticed that video game companies don't mind people making online games out of the things they've made IF it isn't sold for money.
No games to my name...
