Try using an mp3 file instead. If that doesn't work, check the music file isn't corrupt

You can't use MP3s with GE.

I find that .mid files are quite problematic, the music I use has many instruments, while the .mid only plays one. Also you can only play one music track at a time. Is there another file just a tier down from .mid that sounds good and stops the crackling sound?

Game Editor supports multiple music/sound filetypes, here's a list of them (found from Wikipedia):
.wav .voc .iff .aiff .riff .8svx .mid .ogg .mod .s3m .it .xm
I'm sure you'll find one that works for you :D

Also make sure that you have the best audio settings selected.
For checking them, go to Config -> Game Properties and there look at the Audio format.
44100 Hz is the best quality, so make sure that your project is using it.

If the noise still stays, it could be that even if GE supports .ogg, it doesn't possibly 100% support the
codec you're using. So, I'd recommend trying to open your file up in some other music program, and exporting it
as .ogg from there, that way you could possibly find a program which uses an ogg-codec GE supports.

If even that doesn't help, the problem might be your audio card.
