Problem with tiles

For some reason, when I add a tile for the background of my game, clear spots show up in the bitmap when I import the texture into GE. So far this has only been happening with white (for my character sprite) and there isn't any white in the background texture, so what's the deal?

ge is using the top left pxl as the transparency, on ur character sprite, change the colour behind him/her to a colour thats not pure white...
is that ur problem?

That was not my exact problem, since I'm not having problems with the character but with the environment tile, BUT it did answer my question and now I know how GE chooses the transparency for sprites. THANKS!
