Rise of the Undead Infection: Alpha

Postby AnarchCassius » Fri Apr 22, 2011 9:05 pm

This in a zombie survival action game I'm developing. If all goes as planned there will be a commercial and free version released on iPhone, if possible Android, and if demand exists PC/Mac/Linux. Bee-Ant and Werty requested a demo of this in chat like a month ago but I got hit with a virus and then had to put it off.

This is mostly a test of the core game mechanics, even the final free version should have a bit more content, but it is still a very playable and imo fun game. Two characters are available in the mall setting. The cop is a bit tougher and quite good with guns, however his starting weapons are both ammo dependent so be sparing til you have alternatives. The clerk is faster and can carry more and good with blunt objects, which is good since although he can reload his shotgun quickly he doesn't start with a lot of ammo.

The mall setting is largely complete and offers a good variety of enemies and items. Note that when the undead are active at night you cannot use the elevators to leave the level. From 6:00 AM - 6:00 PM some zombies may spawn but you can go to new areas as you please. This is semi-inspired by Rogue-likes so you don't go back to levels and although you can save, death is permanent and you shouldn't expect to beat the game easily. In fact don't expect to beat this version at all, but it will save high scores. :)

When you leave you'll go to the downtime menu where you can go to a new level by choosing Scavenge, regain some stats over time by choosing Rest, or level up abilities with Level-Up (more experience comes each night). If you rest past nightfall a new level and zombie attack will automatically begin. The other options will work soon.

Mouse: Move to look/aim
Click inventory to use/equip items
Click closed objects to search
Click locked gates and doors to unlock (with lockpicks)
Click on pretty much anything else to fire
You can re-select your current weapon to reload it or click anywhere when it's empty

Arrow keys move

Uploaded shredded file so here's a link: http://www.mediafire.com/?zd9v36lv9ylle6a
PC only at this time, Mac and Linux quite possibly available upon request.

I like it! Reminds me of zombies ate my neighbors, but not cartoony.

dont really know what items are
dont know all items i can search are, wasted bullets searching things like the cash registers
walk like hes on ice, but i think it adds to the affect of the zombie horror

Thanks. I'm glad people like it, even if the response hasn't been huge.

Zombies Ate My Neighbors was in fact, one thing that inspired us. A lot of different ideas went in to the game and a lot of stuff isn't shown yet.

We'll be adding some in game help text to better explain and ID items soon. Originally searchable items had a mouse-over cursor change but that bugs level changing in GE right now. Also there would be no good translation of the effect for touch-screen mobiles since you'd be poking your finger on the main screen, not dragging it like a mouse.

So items will probably flash/highlight briefly every so often. This effect could go on the searchables as well, but I wonder what people think.

For testing convenience, the currently search-able items are trash cans, gun racks, metal and wood cabinets, and soda machines. Soda machines may yield more than one drop.

Should be a new version, with Linux and a video later today.

House I'm renting in forclose, new owner being irrational and I've needed to seek legal help so I have reasonable time to move, hence slight delays and no video yet.

However, I do have a newer version, some bug fixes, nicer effects, a new zombie type toward the later stages. It has a Linux executable, tested on Mint 8 and a totally untested Mac one. If anyone tries that let me know how it works out for you.
