Opinions wanted: driving tank into water

I have several ideas, but I want people's opinions. I have a tank that you drive around. I will have a background text actor, displaying a ground/water etc. You can drive the tank into shallow water, but I want to stop you from being able to drive in the deep water. I can find the character (tile) of the part of background you are on, to find what sort of terrain it is.

I could make a collision, so the deep water acts like a wall, but This would look silly, and I'd need to make a new actor and there'd have to be a lot of them (as I am planning to build the level from a text file, and I can't do dynamic tiling).

Another option is to make it so you sink and die. But that could get really annoying.

Another option is to make it so that when you enter the edge of the deep water, you temporarily lose control and an auto-pilot takes over and drives you back into the shallows.

What do you think?

The how part isn't to difficult: I already have variables to control movement. I just need to disable keydown events, and then adjust those variables from another source. I'm already using it to pilot you through a armoury building. The main thing I need is to know which direction is toward the land, which shouldn't be too difficult to find.

I would suggest different options on different locations on the water. This makes the game more thrilling if you never know what will happen where...Even the diying option should be at least once.

In the game I currently wirk, there is also such a thing: One randomly appearing character will walk on a mine and terminate the game if you don't shoot it quick enough. But you don't klnow who it is. at least not in the first paying rounds.
