Worm War Development topic! - (DEMO & need graphics artist)

Postby lcl » Fri Jan 04, 2013 4:13 pm

Hello forum!

This is the development topic for my new game, Worm War (the name is most likely going to change)
which is a worm battle game similar to LieroX and Open LieroX, if someone knows those games.

I'm going to update any progress news to this topic.

The game isn't playable yet, but some of the biggest things to do are already done.
These are:
  • Level loading from three .bmp files
  • Ability to define your own controls (for keyboard & gamepad)
To do:
  • A level editor that combines the three levels into a single file (Currently under work!)
  • Usage of weapons
  • The basic gameplay engine
  • Sounds
  • Bigger levels (Currently under work!)
  • Better graphics
  • Possibly more different characters
  • Possibly change to a bigger resolution
  • Possibly an AI to play against when you have no friend to play with

So the game is built in a way that it loads the levels from external files.
This allows for all of you to make your own levels when the game is ready!

Could you be the graphics artist for this game?
As most of you possibly know, I'm not a wizard at creating graphics
with computer. So I would be glad to have someone talented working with me
providing me good graphics that I could use. PM me if you're interested.

Or could you design some levels?
Or if you wouldn't like to be a graphics artist you could of course help me
by making some levels to the game. If you want to help me and create some levels, please
send me a PM.

Or would you help me as a beta-tester?
If you don't feel like working with graphics but still want to help, you could become a beta-tester.
If you are ready to really take the time and test the game every now and then and write some useful
feedback about the game, you could be of valuable help for me. Once again, PM me if you're interested.
(I am not going to give everyone the possibility to be a beta-tester, because I only need a few goodbeta testers to help me.)

Want to see something real about the game? DOWNLOAD the demo!
So, finally, here's a demo of the game.
Note that it's not playable yet, you can only see how the controls options and menus function and how the
levels load and you are able to run around in the levels.

If the game freezes when you go to the loading screen, you have to run the game in compatibility mode for win XP!

Pre-defined Controls:
    Player 1:
  • A - left
  • D - right
  • W - jump
  • Left shift - change weapon (keep it pressed and use WASD to move the selector)

    Player 2:
  • Arrow left - left
  • Arrow right - right
  • Arrow up - jump
  • Right control - change weapon (keep it pressed and use thee directional keys to move the selector)

You can also make a sort of an explosion with Return. It doesn't explode actually but creates a hole to the position of player 1.
This is just for testing the thing, in the ready game it will have an explosion animation and then create the hole to the position of the
explosion.

Well, I think that's it this time! :D
Have a good day!

Well, as I said in the post I am planning to add better graphics.
And I wonder how you can say that gaming is 100% awesome while there's pretty much nothing to play

Oh, I forgot to mention one thing.

If you are using Windows 7, you may have compatibility problems. If the game freezes when you go to
the loading screen, you should run the game in compatibility mode for Windows XP!

Glad to see this progress! That level editor is pretty sweet. It'll be even better once you get the exporter working. :)

I might suggest there be a third color in the mask for unbreakable ground (for instance, Ground under the spawn points).
Actually, it might be fun to blow up underneath the spawns, but a lot of people might see it as a flaw, idk.

Since there's already a Worms game, (never played it, it's a tbs game right?) why not choose a different animal like a snail or something? Snails could hide in their shells for defense lol.

Thanks for feedback!
You gave me some good ideas. It could be good to have unbreakable land.
The thing about using something else than worms is actually a very important
thing. I don't know why I didn't think anything else from the beginning.
Well, it remains to be seen if I can come up with something different. :D

Thanks anyway!

Been working on the level editor.
The basic level saving and loading system begins to take shape. :)
