Claymation for games

Postby Freddy » Sat Jan 17, 2009 6:22 pm

I recently found a side-scroller shooting game (Platypus) that used claymation for every object. I've never heard of using claymation in games before, but it's actually pretty cool.

You can read the creators story of the game here: http://www.squashysoftware.com/makingplatypus.php
Pretty sad, actually.

Anyway, I just thought that was interesting. It'd be really cool to see someone make a game like this with GE.

Not sure why it's called platypus...

I make my own claymation as a hobby, but I havent put any on youtube yet. I was thinking of making a Morph game tho or a Wallace and Gromit game, it would just take a while since when you put the frames on the computer you have to get rid of the background in every frame.
Current projects:
Techno-Tank Arena: on hold
Techno-Tank SuperPortal (working title): 0.1%
Bowels of Galaxies: 35% (was a bit too optimistic)

This is very interesting... i think i might do this in a game it would make everything way simple. compared to trying to draw something on the computer.

Have you ever played neverhood?
I think it's the most hilarious game ever created using clay.
Here's a cutsene, which, I think, is the funniest.

Yeah, and you don't need to take classes for a super complex 3d animation software either.

But creating clay animations takes a lot of effort too.
I tried it once and gave it up.
And, heh, there were 3 tons of clay used to create Neverhood!

You do have a point there. Plus you need a good digital camera to have a decent outcome.

Still, it's alot more entertaining than sitting in front of your computer pressing buttons...

Yes. Lego animations are a possibility too. But I think I'd tend to use them for movies, really.

They made Platypus for iPod Touch and iPhones (I have it), and the game is actually pretty good. :)
