helpful tips on how to decrease your game size ( MB )

Postby stevenp » Tue Apr 01, 2008 4:02 pm

this toipc is to make people aware of how to decrease their games size ( MB ) as much as posible, without loosing noticable quality.

CONVERT YOUR SOUNDS TO A LOWER QUALITY

how?
any audio converting program can do this, but the one that i find most useful is WAVE PAD'S "SWITCH" APPLICATION

http://www.nch.com.au/wavepad/masters.html

downloading this program will ask you if you want to install additional programs, there wil be one called "switch"
enable the box to install this, and click ok

opinions may vary from person to person, but i find setting your conversions to (>>> see picture 1 at the bottom of this post<<) these settings is the best option in most cases

the sound1 zipped folder containes a sample sound i use in my game, and as you can hear, even tho the quality has been drasticaly reduced, its virtualy un-noticable

on avrage, if you convert all of your sounds to this setting you can have atleast 65+ sounds ( at 1-3 sconds each) and it will only cost 2 MB of space!!

how to use the program
click encoder options, and select the setting i mentioned earlier

if you want to put the converted sounds somewhere, you can do this by clicking "output folder"

at the top, click the green "add files" button then convert at the bottom left, and thats all!

HOW TO REDUCE THE GAME SIZE EVEN MORE ( graphics based )

some of you have asked this question before to yourselves ( see link below )

http://game-editor.com/forum/viewtopic. ... 62&p=36230

well i have been experamenting with GE and noticed some very intresting things

as desribed by markslane, a game's graphic when exported, increases the size of it ( MB wise )

this is dependant on THE RESOLUTION of the picture, NOT the existing size of it

( example ) ( these values are random )
so if your picture is 20 KB and a resolution of 500x500 the end result will be an additional 1.020 MB

if your picture is 20 KB and resolution of 1000x1000 the end result will be an additional 2.020 MB

altho JPEG is smaller the PNG, its the resolution of the picture that drastically increases the size of it, so you could have a JPEG that is 300 KB at 1000x1000 and a PNG that is 500x500 and the JPEG will amont to more when exported

( please confirm if this is corect markslane)

i figured this out when i did a few tests,

first i exported a game with 1 pac man actor ( no animation )

and it amounted to 1.44 MB

i had an amination that was a PNG, then exported it,

i used the same animation in JEPG, exported it, and noticed there was almost no difference in MB size

then i increased the resolution of both pics slightly, and noticed an increase in size drastically
