This is how I develop games...

1. I first make the basic graphics. Like the main character and the tiles for the first level.
2. Next, I make the basic engine. I will use this to test out my character's movements and make sure that everything looks good in the game.
3. After that, I make more graphics. I add animations to my main character, add more tile animations, and make at least one enemy.
4. Then I make a better engine and the first level. I will add better gameplay (like health and enemy AI) and I will start the level design process. At this point, I usually make a main menu as well.
5. Then it's time for final details. I finish the rest of the levels, make bosses, make music, and do all of the debuging.
6. Finally, I compile my game :P

It's pretty basic but it works :D

How I make games(Note: I mainly use RPG Maker now)
1: Scripts(Optional)
2: Graphics(Also optional, as RPG Maker has a ton of default graphics)
3: Audio(I never make my audio)
4: Mapping
5: Events(Characters, signs, etc)
6: Mapping
7: Mapping
8: Mapping
9: Mapping
10: Mapping
11: Events(Well, this step is more or less randomized)
12: Storyline(Either that, or more mapping, which moves these two steps waay down the list)
13: Final release(Either that, or more mapping, which moves these two steps waay down the list)

I think people need to read each tip carefully, and test each by making a mini-game with each tip, then which one you feel most comfortable with is the one to do.

Maybe everyone here should create a "getting started zip" that would include, graphics, music, sfx, tutorials and links, sample games, bits of code, and a manual for GE to help out newbies. That way, newbies could easily test out each process to develop games. :D

PS: I know that GE comes with included graphics and sample files but what I'm talking about is lots of files. Each based on a specific topic. :P

I could aid in the sample files, music, and graphics. But we would need a lot more people to make this complete :P

What about PONG. WE have three Pong games, beginner PONG, includes basic rectangles and circle ball, Advanced PONG, someone wrote about a more respectful way to do it that is close to how the people who created Pong made it (forget who showed though) with advanced graphics with shading, and then 3d PONG

EDIT: The advaned Pong script was Savvy's PONG in a canvas.

Yes, this is exactly the type of thing I was talking about. If this stuff wasn't copyrighted, I would build off of it :P

Just use it, it's taken from RPG Maker, and you think they copyright their graphics and audio? If yes, no one would be using these graphics anyways. I compiled it by the way.

Alright, cool :D
But not all of these will be useful to new GE users. Plus, we need some sample GED's and links to tutorials. But good job. +point for that

Anyone else got some stuff to add? :P

@NOH: Pong is great :D Could you post it?

I will organize this zip, so anyone that has a contribution, upload it here or send it as a PM to me and I will add it into the zip.

What we really need right now is lots of sample files. Like files demonstrating: anti-moonwalk, basic and advanced AI, different game style templates, using canvases, etc.

Isn't that the purpose of this forum? Don't get me wrong, perhaps there is more than you think of, there are dozen of great demos in this forum!
So maybe you could put all the good demos in your zip file, that way it will be easy to get good demos for the new comer, a pack that could be included with GE would be great! (Additional download with GE?)
It's just too bad the Art sub-forum only started recently, so it's not the most resourceful S:
Programming games is an art,
