Forum Maintenance

Postby skydereign » Thu Apr 12, 2012 3:54 pm

We'll be restructuring the forum a little, so you might notice some things out of place for today, and possibly for the next week. But the forums should be up and running relatively normally throughout. One of the bigger changes is an easier to use support section along many other things.

Good to hear!

One thing I may suggest is sub-devising in seperate forums the programming, sound design and art design parts :)
In game development, I see often two kinds of topics. Questions about how to do something, or simply a talk about a game someone is making, it can get pretty tangled up.

If you take my ideas, I believe that sub devising the programming part in theses categories would help: Event/Action programming (For people who uses the interface instead of scripting), general scripting (All the rest to do with scripting something!) and script samples (People who want to provide scripting examples for others to use)
I don't think that an Advanced Scripting section would be necessary

for sound design perhaps it could be: Creating sounds (For the process of creating sounds), creating music (For the process of creating music), sound banks (Optional, for people who wants to provide sounds for others to use!) and music banks (Optional, for people who wants to provide music for others to use)

and art design could be: Creating art (For the process of creating graphics and art) and art banks (For people who wants to provide art for people).

Since implanting this into the current posts, it might be a bit hard so perhaps creating an archive forum might help... but it might be too radical of a change

And I only give this out as ideas, since you probably already have a plan :)

And just when I got here too. Good thing I didn't get too adjusted to the old system. ^^'

Is it intentional that we can't use the new forum sections yet?
When I try to open one it just says that: "You do not have the required permissions to read topics within this forum."

Is this because of the maintenance being still under work?

No, it wasn't really intentional. It seems not all the permissions were copied over correctly. That'll be fixed shorty.

We'd love to have new icons (a full set). They should be the same general size, but perhaps this time around they can be a bit sharper, as the current ones are a bit fuzzy. Pretty much all the new forums are up, though not finished, so if you can make a set of icons, it would be much appreciated.

Here were the first things that came to mind (mind you I'm pretty tired right now so they might not be the best). Now if we want, we can use the ge pacman in each of them, sort of like we have right now, or we can leave that out. So if you want you can integrate the pacman in each one, though it isn't necessary (I was thinking if you do then the following will usually act as some form of background).
Getting Started -> an arrow
Tutorials -> numbered bullet points
General -> just the pacman
Game Development -> gears like it is now with the pacman (though this might be too reminiscent of game maker's logo)
Game Demos -> not sure (could have the pacman and some dots reminiscent of the actual pacman game)
Game Resources -> a directory
Showcase -> I was thinking this might use a small icon of one of the showcased games

Support
General -> not really sure on this one, could either be a planet or similar (for general) or a question for support
iOS ->iphone or similar
Linux -> tux
Mac -> mac icon
Windows -> windows icon
Android -> android icon

Game Editor Development
General -> a small but recognizable version of the actual editor (if possible)
Feature requests -> something similar to the above

Here's what I had so far, though I didn't take your ideas in consideration but now I will!

Edit: Also I kept the original files (With all the layers) of these icons, so if a simple addition and change needs to be done, it can easily be done :)

The current icons are 48x48, so you have a little more space to work with. So far so good.

I actually wanted the icon to be about the same size as the Read/Unread marker. But if you insist with bigger icons, I can make the firsts ones again, but bigger!

Oh, I was planning on having those change to the larger size, instead of the forum icons shrinking to match.
