[demo] Ropeman!

[demo] Ropeman!

Postby morcior » Fri Jan 26, 2007 7:45 am

I had this idea for a game and wrote this demo yesterday. Its only 2 levels and is a little buggy but I think I'll go on to develop it more!

You control a stick man and can click things to attach your rope to them! The goal is to reach the end of each level.

Controls
A = Left
D = Right
Mouse Click = Attach Rope
W = Release Rope

Excellent stuff. You may be onto something there. Would be great with brighter graphics but not too much, like one of those crazy minimalist games the Japanese make. Any more plans for it ? If I could suggest some terrain with cracks in it, which crumble after a couple of seconds of rope attachment. Or a parachute pickup to let you glide down narrow vertical tunnels where ropes can't be used ?

Very nice idea!

Some things to think about:
Work a bit on that rope behavior it's a bit too elastic, and you shouldn't be able to move upwards so easily without speed.
Make it so that the rope doesn't pass through walls, and so that it can bend in some points. You could do that with a couple of more actors who would serve as break points, and have simple "line to" between them.
Any way a nice demo.

anchor rope
I. . . . . . I
o_______o - break point actor.
. . . . . . . . .\
. . . . . . . . . \ - rope
. . . . . . . . . .\
. . . . . . . . . . O -stick man
Why do i always get stuck?

I don't want to share the source at the moment... should I post in a different forum?

ok noted for the future :)

I did some more work on the game today.

I've tweaked the rope behaviour to make it more responsive and just more fun to play the game with. Ropes only attach to the outer wall of a level now too, like a grappling hook type thing. Ropes don't bend around corners however, and probably never will unless GE gets some better collission testing functions! (like point collisions and raycasting onto specific actors).

The gameplay is a lot harder now since I've made it that you aren't allowed to touch any part of the level.

Also changed graphical style to plain black/white but I haven't settled on how I want levels to look yet.

lol I bet it is tricky with a laptop mouse! :P

I'm still working on this game and may post a demo soon. Its a lot smoother than before but I still feel it needs something in addition to ropes to spice up the gameplay.... I'm working on what that should be
