It's not that versions don't have sound... it's just that gE used to use an old sound format that Fedora doesn't use anymore. So, any version without the fix added wouldn't be able to play sound. After voicing enough interest, akr managed to switch gE's sound to use alsa so all Linux distributions would be able to have sound again. So if you were to downgrade to say fedora 11, that would have all the oss packages required to play music in gE. That being said, the fix was never put into the main 1.4 release, but has been added for 1.5 (which is why you can have sound there). The version on the .net site that isn't working for you is a 1.4 version with sound working. This is only a problem for linux users, and I'm amazed you've managed to go without noticing it, what fedora are/were you running?
