Hey guys,

I uploaded the game on its current state which is only 2 levels. It's like a small demo for you at least to play and at the same time maybe tell me what you think... :wink:
or maybe if you find something wrong or some bugs. :) scroll through to the downloads section.

UPDATE:

070712 - Thread open.
070912 - Basic structure of the platform game almost complete.
       - Destructible box done. Gives energy when destroyed.
       - Coins made.
       - Point A and Point B spot.
       - Two obstacles. Falling tile and flying spike.
       - Simple Enemy. Walking left and right.
071012 - HUD completed: shows life, energy bar, coins, level name and countdown timer.
       - Updated game design: added new objects such as bump box(non-destructible) and coins(bronze and gold).
       - Checkpoint working properly.
       - Enemies can now be stepped-on to flatten or attacked. Still simple enemies walking left and right.
071712 - Main screen completed: shows a press enter to play text.
       - Loading screen completed: shows the name of the level before the actual level starts.
       - Level 1 and 2 completed
       - I made a website for the games I made with gE and for the updates of Smirky
       - Elements added to the game such as moving platforms and bump box with lots of coins and spikes falling from ceiling.
       - Updated GDD
072512 - Optimized the images and music
       - Level 3 finished.
       - Added new enemy and a friendly
       - Updated GDD


Legend:
* = Updates on game design

Gameplay

Progression
The progression will be linear as it will be a level to level progression. There will be 3 areas with 5 levels each and with bosses on each area. In order to proceed you need to beat all the levels and defeat the boss.

Objectives
The main objective of the game is to defeat Dark Smirky and stop his evil plans for the Land of the Smirks. In order to defeat him you must defeat the first two bosses first and proceed on defeating him.

Controls
The game will have two choices for controls, either keyboard or a controller. Keyboard controls will be implemented first then the controller if the game is finished.

Left/Right Arrow Keys - Movement
Space Bar - Jump
X key - Attack


Mechanics

Actions and combat:
The player will have direct control of Bud Smirky from moving, jumping and attacking. The combat will be player versus environment but most of the time the players will try to stay alive and not die of the obstacles on every level.

Attacking enemies is simple. As most platformers, you need to jump over the enemies to kill them or attack them on their blind spot such as an enemy that has spike in front can only be killed and attack at the back or top of its head. Collision to the enemies or falling down a hole will be a loss of life for the player.

The player will be given a number of lives to start with and will be added to it the pick-ups if the player get any. If the player dies the whole level will be restarted. There will be checkpoints on the level if the player managed to reach the checkpoint.

Pick-ups:
Pick-ups will be available on some boxes. Some boxes will be labeled to let the player know that it is a life or energy pick up.

Energy - This will be added as energy points and will be a life up when you manage to collect a hundred.
Life Up - This will add one life to the player’s life.
Key Smirky - 2 pieces of a yellow colored smirky when connect will open a path


Game World

Background Story:
Smirks live their lives as happy as they can be. They are all smiles always, as confident as they can be. One day Dark Smirky decided to remove the smirks and smiles out of the faces of his fellow Smirks. He was able to concoct a drug that will be able to remove smiles and manipulate not only the Smirks but also the other creatures.

One day Dark Smirky decided to spread the drug like a virus to the Land. Everything and everyone was affected, except one.

Coming back from his long journey was Bud Smirky. When he arrived he saw the Land has a different atmosphere and was surprised that creatures started attacking him for no reason. Now he needs to go through the Jungle, the Cave and to the City of Smirky in order to know what is happening.

Scale:
The scale of the game will not be too big as currently I am the only one creating it. There will be 3 Areas: Jungle, Cave and Smirky City. Each of the area will have 5 levels to be passed where the 5th level will be the boss of the area.

Objects:
Except from the game characters the objects that can be found in game will be the following:
- platform/tiles: all the tiles of the game will be here
- destructible boxes: the source of energy and life pick-ups
- energy pick-up
- life pick-up
- *coins: gold and bronze
- *question box / bump box
- *bump box of coins
- *falling spikes from ceiling
- *moving platform
- *moving obstacles
- *rolling boulders

Time:
There will be a countdown timer on each and every level. When the timer run’s out and the player still did not finish the level then the player will start losing coins and if the coins reaches zero then the player will lose all life and the game will be over.


Characters

Smirky
Round-like creatures that resides in the Land of Smirk. Their hands and feet floats separately to their body which also is their head. They are happy creatures. Always smiling, celebrating and enjoying their lives. They are intelligent creatures and now are on top of the intelligence chain within the land.

Bud Smirky
Bud is the main protagonist of the game. After coming back from his journey outside the Land of Smirk, he is now faced with a task of saving his own land.

*Key Smirky
once was a one set of yellow smirky who open a path for any smirky to enter the jungle but now was split into 2. They need to be combined to open a path.

Dark Smirky
One of the most intelligent Smirky and the final boss of the game. His curiosity caused him to experiment on his fellow creatures and now he has all the control of the Land.

*Red Smirky's
The less infected of all the Smirks. They are the ones who guard the Land on the outside. They are primarily stationed on the entrance of the jungle and some inside the jungle.

*Red Smirky's
The patrol of the jungle. They patrol the jungle of the land and they were harmless before the infection.

Sounds good, what's your twist to the game? It has to have one, otherwise it will be lost in the swell of basic platformers sadly!

This game looks intriguing! I really like how you planned it all out before starting, that makes it a whole lot easier in the long run to know exactly where you're trying to take this. I'm not the best GF artist, but I do have some sprite sheets you could use:) ( as long as ya don't steal them ;) when I get to my comp in a bit I will post a couple to see if you like them. :) but all in all, sounds like it should be a fun game that you can take a lot of places!

Here's a jungle tile set I made a while back:

Here is the tile that would "Crumble" when stepped on, it 16 frames in width, and only 1 frame in length:

@Savvy: at the moment I don't want to put any twist. my aim for now is to have a complete platform game or at least if I finished the base structure of a platform game then I will start to think of a twist for the game... if I have a complete game then that's +1 to my portfolio. I'm just starting so I don't want it to be too much yet.. :)

@RipperR7420: WOW!.. those sprites are awesome. I will definitely use the jungle one... Thank you so much! the thing is I want to be consistent on the graphics part... are you sure you want to make more? if you do decide I'll put you in as Ripper Studios for the graphics... i'll show some screens in a while to show you I used your tileset... :D :D :D

That would be Rad! Smirky would look good standing on that tileset ;) And thank you! I was learning how to draw pixel shading for tilesets when I drew that. Which I did all in MS paint btw :D I wouldn't mind trying to draw more for Smirky! Lets see what it looks like so far though :)

UPDATE:

I got most of them working properly. Next one i'll do will be the HUD. then I'll be doing the levels one by one. Almost finished on the basic structure of the game.

it's just a sample level though to test the objects. I edited the colors of your lava tiles to suit a cave like tile. if you don't mind. :) :) :)

Haha this is looking sweet!! :D The controls are super tight!
I'm guessing you cannot hurt the enemies though, ya? Every time I bumped into them, I died!
And also, the tiles look abit strange.. I think it's because they're overlapped though? ;)
I can fix the tile problem if you wanna send me the .ged :) but Smirky is fun!

ah the tiles maybe because I was trying to make a foliage design on the tiles. :) It looks a bit empty to me but for now I guess empty is fine.
And for the enemies, yes you cannot hurt them yet. I'm actually making one level right now i'll give you the ged tomorrow so you can check it out. :D
can I request a sprite? you saw the box and coins... is it ok to request a much better one? one that would fit your style of art. my artistic ability is not good...i just made those to represent that they are box and coins.. :)

Haha alright, well I made these real while I was waiting for ya to reply. they're 50x50.
Never drew a crate before, It was kinda fun haha! anyways, check em out. I will re draw them to 32x32 in a few.

@RippeR7420: those boxes are awesome! thanks... it took me a while to finish level one... I did some balancing of the level making sure it's ok... and that took a while... anyways here's the link to the ged+data

check out the ged and data and give me some pointers if you can find any way to lessen the process on coding... :) if you are not busy is it ok to request another graphic? :) if you look into the data you'll see a rock image. I need a big rock boulder with size 170x170. thank you... :)
