Keyboard = sign problem

I have tried every thing I can think of to make the = key work ! In every other program I can use the keyboard as normal eg; notepad MSword... BUT when I load up GE it simply wont do anything , it's as if I havent pressed anything at all. At the same time the [ and ] keys have moved one space over to different keys !! what the heck is going on here? I'v tried setting the keyboard up as US and UK and I'v reinstalled keyboard drivers and then went out and got a wireless 102 key keyboard to see if it was maybe a strange laptop keyboard issue? same problem same key shift same = key not there. PLEASE CAN ANYONE HELP ME OUT this has been going on now for almost 6 months through 3 updates!!!
