I think a lot of the sound preference is simply what's available; that is, when I download sounds off the net, they're never .voc format. Its always mp3, ogg, etc. I really don't know what a .voc is.
wav is compatable with everything, so that's what people are used to. What might be nice is if someone in the know could explain what those other formats are, and what advantages they offer, if any.
Mojo made good point in one of his posts, that when you compress your wav's, you can put a lot of sounds in a rather small amount of space. I always use wav for my sounds.
