Other Game engines

Talk about making games.

Postby a2k » Fri Mar 09, 2007 6:17 am

Like I said, apples and oranges.

After several months of 3D game engine research, I don't think you can find a better deal than this. I actually got my game license before it went up to $200. I got it for $100 and that includes a lifetime of updates. Even at $200 that's a steal. GE is almost $100 bucks for a year, but what about after 3 years? $300?

The game that you're talking about is just the demo game. The engine comes with full source code, world editor, model viewer, etc. It's features are aimed towards next-gen game development.

Anyway, to each their own. Both C4 and GE aim at different game developer audiences, so I can understand your reactions to it. But as the topic is titled, I hopefully shed a little light on another area of game development.

I always thought Hell would be a giant load screen that goes on for eternity, then one day, eons later, it would end, only to reveal a slightly different loading screen.

Well, checking the Buy page, it says Gold Package is $94.95 for 1 year of free FULL Version Updates. Is this true or is it a lifetime of updates?

C4's editors are accessed by pressing the tilde key ~, but the editors are not available in the demo. The majority of game development for C4 is in a C++ compiler writing the dll that hooks into the engine.

Have you guys heard of Torque? It's also a game engine that has been traditionally the engine of choice for independent game developers.

Another engine that I like to play with from time to time is the AGAST adventure game engine.

Anyway, my point is that other game engines similar to C4 would cost you well over $200, even into the thousands. I have no intention of convincing anyone to take it up, I'd just like to be informative about other game engines that are out there.

What about XNA? Have you guys ever take a look at that?

I use Maya, but really, it all depends on your preference of how you create 3D content. It's a huge learning curve. Took me over a year before I was comfortable with the nuances of the program. 3DS Max is much quicker to pick up, but it's not as open-ended. XSI is gaining a lot of ground in popularity amongst game developers, ever since Half Life 2, but I think Maya is still the industry standard.

Here is a link to a course website at Worchester Polytechnic institute in which teams of students used C4 to create games in about 4 weeks of time.
