I made a demo similar to this but it had a few bugs, and I have learned a few things since then. Here is an updated version of it. The main improvement is that the storage is dynamic, so there is no cap for the amount of items that can be held. This also is split so that you can do different actions with each item. The bottom set of mushrooms uses the one actor approach, and the upper mushrooms use multiple items.
