Never could get GE(or games) working in wine. The native version works fine though, other than minor issues like cut and paste into and out of GE.

of all the windows programs i've tried to use in linux, WINE only runs two of them in a usable state. I've probably tried 20 or so.

But that's ok. That's what dual boot is for.

I can't see myself ever going back to windows full-time. Its just too clunky and slow, and wastes too much of my pc's resources. There's so many apps for windows, that's what makes it great, but that's like buttercream frosting on a cake made out of asphalt.

After 8 years of mastering photoshop, i found to my surprise, that its actually faster for me to make game sprites and backgrounds in GIMP than in photoshop.

Lol, DST Your so right. Windows IS like icing on asphalt. But when using ATI, Ubuntu GLITCHES OUT LIKE INSANLY, and sometimes it dosnt change the resolution and sometimes it begins to slowly start to lag, and yes I have the drivers :/ I cant update the drivers though because there in a .run format which opens C++ -.- My graphics card is an ATI Radeon 4850.

Yes, i had the same problems with my ATI card in linux. It's ati's fault because they don't want to write drivers for it.

When i was buying cards, i just looked at the price. Back then, i hadn't used linux, so the other things about card value didn't matter to me.

Thanks to Fuzzy for hooking me up with this sweet Nvidia card!

Dude, use ATI still if you can because of Avivo, and btw :D Download the ATI drivers from ATI, then save it to your desktop.

Open terminal then put... soemthing I forgot.

Anyways, now ubuntu works perfectly with resolution bug fixed and all! :LD I'm usign the newest ATI drivers on Ubuntu without glitches. The effects work perfect, no lag :D Just youtube the stuff :D

I dunno anything about Avivo, but I won't go back to that ATi card cause this NVidia card is waaaaay better.

I had a radeon x1050, which is actually just a radeon 300/550 series with a couple extra chips added.
So in linux, i had to use the 300/550 driver to run it, and the results weren't great.

But glad to hear you got everything working!

I love linux and i can hardly stand to boot to windows anymore. Its soooo slow and there's so much redundancy.....even navigating folders is much easier in linux.

Yeah Linux is amazing, but let me give you a little bit more info on ATI Avivo :D

ATI Avivo brings out the max contrast ratio and color and quality of your TV / monitor.

read more here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ATI_Avivo

It's very very amazing :D. Much like Nvidia PureVideo, only constantly not just for videos.

I change my monitor contrast and brightness often, especially when day changes to night.
I am very picky about my monitor brightness. Very.

But i don't use any kind of overlays or autoadjusters like this. I guess i'm jaded, because after all my experience with graphics and software, i find these things are more likely to cause a problem than to actually help. Crash here, game runs slow there, etc. etc.

What i want is a Sound Compressor so all my stuff comes out the speakers at the same volume. I have only found one and it is really lousy.

I emailed Creative to see if they had one, and they don't. Creative, of all people, don't make one!

You are such a fan boy. :P

What is it about gimp that makes it faster for you? As you are aware, gimp is going to change drastically soon. It might be important to take note of what you like. In any case, I am sure they will retain 'classic mode'.

There are several things that make gimp faster.

1. great svg support eliminates the need for other file formats, i can dump directly from inkscape into gimp.

2. choosing extensions by typing. No more dropdown lists, no more typing this.png and having it save as this.png.jpg cause some file option was set to jpg.

3. The file browser. Ubuntu keeps thumbnails for the images, even in list mode, making browsing for files much easier, whereas in windows i have to always change the view to thumbnails, which most programs don't save, so next time i opened the dialog, i'd have to change the view again and again.

4. The file browser. Ubuntu's file browser makes much more sense than windows, with important bookmarks included in your filesystem by default, no more of this c:>documents and setting>someuser>mydocuments> crap. (and i always have multiple hard drives with os's on them, or similiar so i found myself navigating that way in windows a lot).

5. The image previewer has faster rendering for newer filetypes, such as svg, as opposed to windows picture and fax viewer that chokes on so many of these.

6. More consistency in system colors and fonts mean when i make the theme dark, i don't get black text in black boxes nearly as often as i do in windows. A darker background means images are easier to pick out of a list than they are against white. The black text problem means most color customization in windows isn't really possible.

7. Gimp Loads and Exits much faster than photoshop. It's no longer a big program i keep open for extended periods of time, instead i can close it whenever i finish with an image and open it whenever i need to open another one. Its also much easier to edit your hotkeys. So to say, you can make Gimp act more like photoshop, but you can't make photoshop act more like Gimp.

Yes windows can be customized to do some of these things, but Ubuntu sets them up this way by default. So even customizing Ubuntu is much simpler, i've found, than windows.
