RPG's with Game Editor

Postby absynth » Fri Jun 17, 2005 4:31 pm

Hey there, this seems like a really cool product and i just found it today. I've been digging around some and can't see a clear example of RPG capabilities.

By that I mean things like quests, flags, items, upgrades, dialog. I'm not expecting deep and involved possiblities since this is meant to be an easy way to make a game, however some level of complexity. Kyle's Quest is a good example. It has a simple flag system and editor that I liked which simply established x must happen before y...

I'm not a coder so something like this would be great that could help reduce that end. A way to experiment with ideas and explore some small projects I could do myself would be great.

Thanks
Caleb

that's just it. I don't see anything that clearly shows RPG type games working. all the demos look pretty much like 80's arcade games which is great, but I don't see any clear cut examples of missions in a game with RPG elements like upgrades and modifications... None of the examples I see have much depth, which again is fine for what i see this system doing. I'm sure that scripting area would allow it, but I just need to know up front if it can handle reasonably deep RPG variety before I start digging into this too deep.

Thanks
Caleb

Oh and p.s.
I'm sure this has been asked 100x but is there any plan or is it even possible to support Nintendo DS or PSP? Man that would rock ;)

well those are some tutorials, but i guess these posts are tying to say yes.. heh.. well it seems like a great product. However, i can't really justify buying into this product if no one can actually just say.. yes, game editor is capable of making an rpg.. in fact.. here is a basic example.

If anyone is familiar with kyle's quest, you'd see what i'm talking about. it even comes with a neat little editor. sure there is a lot it can't do, but if something that simple can do RPG type things, i would think this product would do so much more.

Thanks

I'm sure GE is capable of creating RPGs but I wouldn't do any, though. I'm currently developing arcade game (something not different from the "Space Impact" you know from mobile phones) and although the game is very simple it is very hard to do it in GE because it's buggy. Oh man, I'm looking forward to uninstalling GE from my system...

The bigger a project is, the more bugs appear and you have to deal with them. Making a RPG is cool but believe me - it's not worth the nerves imho.

EDIT:
I'm not saying GE is bad tool. In fact it's great. Not much for large projects though.

In fact I'm using older 1.2.8 trial version as the game I'm working on is for StormMill's PocketPC Game Contest held by Sep (I bet you know him;) ) and http://www.CeskeHry.cz (Czech & Slovak Game Developers Community) and I'm not planning to use it after the competition and the 1.2.8 version is just enough for that little project of mine.

I can't really tell that I'm experiencing bugs. Recently I had a little problem when I was trying to make multiple levels in one .ged file. I had two levels in their own activation regions and after the 1st level I moved the view actor to the position of the 2nd level. The view moved fine but what I experienced was that suddenly all the actors stoped responding to collisions (in my case, spaceships and bullets simply flew through each other). Finally I had to place all levels into separate .ged files what solved the problem pretty well. But I think that was just my fault and not a GE bug. But that was what I was talking (writing) about in my previous post, not real GE bugs, but all the 'buggy' situations caused by a scripter. Oh man, I really hate when I don't know what happens under the hood...

But as I said, GE is great. Great job Makslane.

hey thank's for the feedback. a definate answer beat's links to seemingly unreleated topics anytime :) yea i can see what you mean about complexity leading to trouble, however, i'm sure this product will continue to evolve and improve. Good luck and i'll check back in awhile when i'm more prepared to do something full on...

yea you might owe it to yourself to use the latest version. it is a little unfair to knock something if you're using a prior version :) However, one must ask how much has changed i 0.0.2 versions

Thanks
