Help need on creating a mini-map

I can't think of a way to make an animation only appear in a small circle or square, and if it isn't in that square it doesn't appear at all. To show what I mean, look at this image I made.



The top part of the image is the problem, the bottom one is the result I want for my mini-map.

The only way I can think of is to have a border around the square that the inside actor goes behind. The problem might arise when you want to fit something large behind it, and you don't want an enourmous space covered up. But if you have all the things around it above, like background, status bar etc. then you might still be able to pull it off.
