Heads up, GE folks !

Postby digiot » Tue Jun 24, 2014 8:56 pm

Recently, Sky posted, he will continue GE developing next time, so I pointed out some
of the old GE bugs in the "GE 1.4.1 Announcement" thread.
Over the last week, I didn't trust my eyes, the number of views in that thread were
really exploding, around one thousand by now !
And trust me, that are not my fans, rather most may have marked that thread for
e-mailing them on any new post there.
But who and where are they, why don't they take part here on the GE forums ?
However, we don't seem to be such a small community it looks like !

Let's keep up our activities here, we are the flagship of the GE world,

Cheers !

Yeah, you are on to something. All my tournament threads get more than 600 views, some in the thousands, and while I check it often, I doubt the amount of active users on here could make up all them views. There is hope. :)

I do understand how they felt. Maybe some people are just too lazy logging in the forums or are afraid of posting mistakes (Like me towards other forums I created an account in), but hey, I make tons of mistakes in posts. From the people who spectate the forums, I have to agree that gEF is not small, it's growing, and I hope that as it grows, more users will come and join the action in gEf!

Good to know! Many people still spectate the forums (Our old heroes like Bee-Ant for example), but don't post. Makes the forums a bit too quiet. xD

I just wish the spectators could take your tourneys too NoH. That way your tournaments will have much more contestants possible. I also suspected the views of your tournaments lol.
Currently: Semi-Active.
Working on: Maybe putting my test games in gamejolt, polishing them a bit, but I still don't know when.

@DjVan: Yes, I believe too, that there are many more active useres, but sadly, most
of them are only active for their own concerns !
Fine, when you can learn something from here ! As a tip, surf through the GE forums from
their beginning, those were the golden days, and even GEs developer, Makslane, was posting
there.
And of course, welcome, and have a nice time here !

@NoH: But hope will not help much, we also could go praying in the church !
There has to grow a base of enthusiastic, skilled hobbyists, who are participating in
GE development.
And that will not happen just by passively using the GE forums.
If I were evil, I would suggest, to make the GE splash screen mandatory again, that
would increase the forum activity without a doubt !

@jonathang: Our different native languages are a problem, many people don't
even use our Roman alphabet, English is lingua franca here !
But don't be shy with the letters, we're not on a linguistic congress here,
as long as others can understand your posts, all is fine.

Cheers !

You know, it seems the height of popularity, and the height of development of GE was around the time of when GE still cost money to actually use it, I believe it was 30 dollars for a version, so if you wanted 1.3.8, you would have to pay, and when 1.3.9, you would have to pay again. I joined just a bit after 1.4 came out, when GE finally became free, and the big income of GE was supposed to come from licenses to make games for the Apple products. Perhaps, as much as we like a free GE, perhaps it is time GE has a fee to pay for it in 1.5, or any versions after 1.4.1? Just a suggestion though, and I am sure a bit of money would inspire development in GE itself again.

Except that it is mandatory in 1.4, which is the current version of gE. The 1.4.1 version, while used by some members, isn't what most people end up using.

@NoH: Having to pay for something makes people more appreciate a product,
and taking it more serious.
But GE isn't completed enough, it lacks of some essential features to sell
it .

@Sky: There you make a point, so there shouldn't exist too much anonymous GE games.
I am using GE 1.4.1, but 'til I'm coming into troubles with it, I hope, you
have released it finally !

But it was having to get paid for when it was even less completed then it is now, and there were still probably large gaps then between it and others seeing as makslane was the only one use to work on it. I think they over-estimated how much money they would make from licenses. I am not suggesting a high price, just high enough so income comes in through GE.

I think, GE in its former versions has had a better standing, compared to its competitors.
There weren't just so many on the market than nowadays, and they also weren't too matured.

Yes, the business model failed completely, afaik.
NoH wrote:I am not suggesting a high price, just high enough so income comes in through GE.

For whom do you want to achieve the income, for Makslane, for Sky, or for hiring programmers ?
Where we are at the finances, who does actually pay for the GE domain, any clue ?

Well I think there should be some income so maybe mak can work more on GE again, as I believe he had to take a second job because licenses weren't making much money. As you noticed, many more visit the forum then we realize, just don't actively participate in the forums, and I am sure many would pay a small fee for a version that has significant upgrades over this one, such as what 1.5 will have, we could go back to offering the free month for the version, and then you pay for it. We could really use makslane programming a lot more though, and akr if we could get enough money for him as well. Sky seems to be the only one keeping the GE evolution alive. After that, maybe more would feel compelled to get this, and then we could get even more developers on GE. GE3 is going to try to advertise the fact that developers can help work on this.

The problem is, there is no GE 1.5, you could attract people with, neihter a free,
nor a commercial version.
Sky fortunately is focused on releasing 1.4.x, before working on the GE 1.5 version.
Lastly, I'm not sure, if GE's current license model would allow, that you sell its binaries.

For the GE3 video project, why not ask the Jaroodas, they are very promising :

I watched the "Enblast v1.1" trailer, very nice done, the timing during the video,
and than, at the end, the smoothly fading of the GE mascot !
But I fear, some people will skip the video before the end sequence, and don't
take notice of the GE logo.
Maybe, also displaying it at the beginning, would make sure, every viewer will
see GE !

You guys should make a kickstarter and use the funding to forward the engine and advertise it, if money was a problem, haha.

Also, another senior member here to post once and vanish into the air~
