There is a version of Gimp that emulates the Photoshop environment. I haven't tried it myself and it does not include all the functionality of Gimp but it's worth a try. You can find it here: http://plasticbugs.com/?page_id=294
It's called Gimpshop!
Look for other plug-ins and things for Gimp as well that makes the interface better.
For pure sprite-based graphics I use GraphicsGale. It's a pleasure to work with. You can find the free version here: http://www.humanbalance.net/gale/us/
Hope this helps. Otherwise it might just be worthwhile buying Paint Shop Pro.

but if you want some sprites like mine.download caligari's truespace.a very good sprite maker.takes some time to get use to.=/

how do you use it. it asks for a serial number and i never got one 
I always thought Hell would be a giant load screen that goes on for eternity, then one day, eons later, it would end, only to reveal a slightly different loading screen.

Why dont you use anim8or? My apple on my avatar was made with that, and trust me, Im the last one you would see make an ok piece of art on a complicated software.
