Have you ever played Trojan? It would switch you between adventure levels and duels for the boss battles, which was a lot of fun.
One of the good things about the duels is that it gives identity and names to the bosses, which makes beating the game not only completion of a platformer, but also winning in a fighting game too.
Anyway, the controls are very tight and it definitely has that professional platform control to it.
If you build a level editor and then let other forum users build their own levels and characters for it, you could end up with a very complete and deep game, without having to do it all yourself. I'd make a level, and you could keep it when its done.
Just offer the level construction kit, along with the ability to name and include one special item, one miniboss, and one boss. One level per user. (thinking one special item to work out strategy with the bosses, supposing things like keys, potions etc. are things you'd already have built into the game).
What do you think?
