Slate Map Editor (SME) Released

Postby Hblade » Fri Dec 28, 2012 10:23 am

Hello everyone! Some of you have seen the post about the beta of the Slate Map Editor (SME), now its finally released! I'm happy to release this powerful easy (but sometimes buggy, nothing major though) map editor. I was going to use the save method that sky gave me, but I already had the saveVars function and didn't want to risk doing something wrong. Sorry about that.

Functions:
Draw (for tile layer 1 only, used to quickly draw a map)
Layers (Layer 1 is ground, layer 2 is trees, grass, etc, layer 3 is events which you can see what they do in the screenshots, and layer 4 is the Walls layer, used for collision).
Darken other layers (Shows only the layer your on)
Show All (Shows all layers brightened)
Grid (You can toggle rather to have the grid shown or not)
Custom map names and extentions (fast saving and loading)
Right Click to select (You can right click a tile to select that tile instantly if on that layer)

Before you download:
Most of you who program a lot --WILL NOT LIKE-- my code haha. Just a fair warning, if you try reading this your in for a treat. I always have and probably always will be a sloppy coder. It's not that I don't want to code better, its just I'm not quite ready to move on from what I'm comfortable with, reason is because I don't want to end up doing more things wrong. I don't usually rage at anything anymore since I'm 22 and honestly its really childish to rage, but if there is 1 thing that can make me rage more than anything, it's errors in programming. Every time I get an error I get sooo frustrated, this probably means that I'm really into it or something and expect great things then realize I did something wrong. I feel that if I try moving on to harder and more complex code, it'll make matters worse at the moment more than it would help. I do plan on having improved code in the future though, but again I'm just more comfortable with this since I know it better.

So, sorry to all you advanced programmers ;)

This is actually kinda cool, and it's not even that hard to learn to use.
On the other hand, it is not that easy to import the level into one's own game.
But well, I can't think of a better way (at least now :P ). Good work on this!

It's actually much easier to make the actual level with this tile editor than GE's own.
It's just a pity that importing own graphics into this and then using the levels can get kinda tricky. :P
I'd advise you to make a 'How to' -video for this, because people are lazy readers.

But one suggestion. Make it possible to move in the editor by keeping an arrow key pressed.
Having to pressing the key repeatedly is annoying. :D

Anyway, +1 to you! :)
EDIT: Whoa, hadn't noticed I had overtaken your score already! =D
(Had to change that last emoticon, because: "Your message contains too many smilies. The maximum number of smilies allowed is 5." -.- THAT is so annoying!)

Lol thanks :D!

And yeah I'm making a much more advanced one now! ^_^ it's so fun to make xD Hard as heck though. This one uses FILE * method to save and load and it'll come with tutorials :D You can set a username and theme lol on this one its kinda cool :) Changing tilesets would be easy as replacing graphics :D And it only creates as much "Selectable" tiles as the frames your tiles have

And lol yeah your score :P
