Hi everybody!

Here is a list of things I'd like you to answer on your own part, which are true and which aren't true for you.
I'll plan the teaching according to your answers, so please be honest when answering, there's no advance in lying about your knowledge here :lol:
This list contains things I think are crucial to be understood before we can continue to more complex stuff. So that is why I need to know which things you already know,
and which I need to first teach to you.

Game Editor basics

    A) I have a clear understanding of...
  • 1) ...the differencies and different uses of all of the four actor types in Game Editor (Normal, Canvas, Wire Frame Region, Filled Region)
  • 2) ...the Actor Control -panel and everything there is on it
  • 3) ...all of the different event types and how to use them
  • 4) ...all of the predefined variables in GE (including all the basic actor variables) and their basic usage

    B) I know where to find...
  • 1) ...the Global Code -window
  • 2) ...the list of all variables and functions in the game project
  • 3) ...the variable adding dialog

I think that's all I need to know for now.
Please post your answers here, or send them to me via a PM.

When answering, it is enough for me that you just list the letters and numbers of the things that are true for you.
For example, if I wanted to tell that I do have a clear understanding of the different actor types and the Actor Control -panel and that I know where the Global Code -window can be found, my answers would be: A1, A2, B1

Note that you should only say something is true, if the sentence is true for you. What I mean, you can't say yes to the A1, if you don't know what Filled Regions are even if you knew all of the other actor types.

Let's get started! :D

Just decided, to take part, so you don't stand in front of an half empty classroom !
Your effort here is greatly appreciated, tell us all the secrets, we have missed yet !

If I would put it simple, I had to say: A 0 and B all.

But its not so easy. Of course, I have some theoretical understanding of the different
actor types, events, variables and the actor control panel, but I only used a fraction
of it in a very limited way, more for testing purposes.
So I can't say "yes" in the A-rubric, taking you literally.
And what's about the 5th actor typ, which seems to be a subclass of the normal actors,
is it included here, too ?

The B-section seems to be simple. Sometimes, here are new users, who don't even find the
script editor, but if you are inside the editor, you are automatically knowing, where the
B-subjects are, you just see them. But that has nothing to mean, I took the variable- and
the code-adding menus totally wrong in the first place, for example.

Hoping, you get all my knowledge gaps closed !

Cheers !

@digiot: Great, welcome!
I think with the fifth actor type you mean text actors?
It's good that you mentioned it, could have forgotten about it without you..
And you can count on me trying my best to get all your knowledge caps closed. :)

@tvz: Thanks for answering, and no need to be sorry. :)

@Everybody:
As soon as LeeFesler answers, I'll get into work.
First we'll go through the basic things of Game Editor,
and after that we'll dive into the world of coding in GE.

Lcl, we both forgot the View-actor, so my "mysterious" actor is the 6th one.

The sad thing is, I can't recall, what kind of actor it is !
Once, I've found a link to a tutorials- or help-page of the main GE-site here
on the forums, where that actor was introduced.
It accidently got lost, when I cleaned up my millions of tabs a little, and there
seems to be no link from the tutorials/help-pages.

When I had that page open, I tried to go back in the adress bar, to see, from where
it was linked, but I ended in nirwana.
I'm just remembering, I was much excited about that actor.
Maybe, it was the text actor, or is there any other kind of normal actor hidden ?

Would be nice, if someone knew, from what I'm talking, and could provide that link.

Cheers !

Hi everybody!

It's been a while, and LeeFesler hasn't answered yet.
I reminded him of this, and we'll get to start as soon as he answers. :)

@digiot:
Hmm... I wonder if you're having problems with understanding the concept of clones and
creator, collide and parent actor pointers. It seems like that in this topic: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=13074&p=93789

@Turon:
Welcome! Thanks for the answers. :)

You are right, everything concerning accessing actors from code, is a little mysterious
for me, I haven't just practised much of it, yet.
What also is a problem for me, is the handling of clones vs. created actors, what
differences there are, using them in code.
But that are advanced topics, you will hopefully start on a very low level.
Just imagine, one day, your thread has evolved into an sophisticated sticky thread,
and some new user will step into it...

So, now we will start the lessons ?

Cheers !

I have to complement, it seems, that you can only access individual clones through
the great Activation Events, but I'm not sure, if there doesn't exist a trick, or
if I'm misunderstanding something.

@digiot:
Thanks for openly telling what you need help with.
I've planned that first we'll go through the Game Editor basics beginning with different actor
types, then the actor control panel and then all the different event types and other Game Editor basics.
After that we'll start to get into the coding, and we'll start by getting familiar with variables in GE,
and then the referencing of actors through the script, etc. I haven't planned it out yet, but that's the basic
order we'll go, and we'll get to actors and clones pretty quickly. :)
