From Game Editor
Hi, I'm Eric (edh) and I live in Maine, United States.
I'm a software engineer at a small start-up software company. I work with Java (web type stuff; Stripes, Hibernate, Spring, AJAX, CSS, javascript, HTML, etc) mostly. I also have several years of C++ (templates, STL and metaprogramming) and Perl (CGI) programming, as well as lots of database stuff (PostgreSQL, MySQL, Sybase, Oracle, SQL Server) behind me. I also dabble in Ruby and PHP. Still new to Ruby, but if I ever get some free time, I have some ideas to use it.
My blog is ericholsinger.com but I've started using that one mostly for photography and started blogging about programming and technology on ericholsinger.net.
I wrote a tutorial for creating a cross-platform game in Game Editor, targeting GP2X and Windows Mobile based hand-held devices. You can read it on my blog, Use Game Editor to create a cross-platform game for GP2X F-200 and Windows Mobile.
Some of my favorite books:
Programming Game AI by Example - This is such a readable book about game AI, with source in C++. Buckland rocks!
The Game Maker's Apprentice: Game Development for Beginners - I know this is a Game Maker specific book, but it is so well done and I look at it as an example of how to write an accessible game programming book. I really like it.
Stuff you should have if you want to program:
C Programming Language - You should have this. Still don't have it? You should. Not really sure if you should get it? Get it.
C++ Programming Language, The (3rd Edition) (Paperback) - Stroustrup wrote the language. This book is the bible for C++.
