I am new to this

Hi I am presently taking courses in information technology multymedia/animation. going for a BS degree. My interest lies in gaming, programing and designing. seeing how I only started a week ago I am looking for information on what would be the best courses to take as well as getting experiance in the mean time.

Well, it would depend if it is available in the college/university you are/wanna going to.
There would be Game Developing or something like that

@ caponec : It is difficult to recommend anything without knowing your school. But, here is a little bit of my experience, which may help you plan your degree program.
When I got my BS in Computer Science, I focused on just programming (Pascal, C, C++ and eventually Java). My degree taught me how to understand procedural and object oriented programming, algorithms and data structures, etc. However, I'm not sure how much experience I actually got.
As a FT Java developer at my 5th company (3rd start up) since graduating, everything is unlike what I learned in college. I never write anything like the traveling salesman or sorting at work. It's all been done. It was good to study it, but it's been done.
If you learn animation and modelling, maybe the tools you use in school won't be the tools you want for your career. You may have to work harder outside of school to get experience with Maya or Blender or something. And as far as games go, learning C is good for applications like GE or GameMaker but your experience will come though self motivation and the things you do outside of class.
Just some thoughts. Good luck in your degree program.
