I would like to know more about programming just to make my games more universal. So... how exactly do these codes work, particularly the j, af, and ld keys? I'm definitely an amateur in programming... :?

It would be appreciated if there could be an explanation for this :D

j, af, and ld are variables. (integers) not keys.

j whether or not the player can jump. (0 or 1.)
ld is eqaul to the last direction the player was going. (0 for left 1 for right.) -This helps when determining whether or not the animation needs to be changed.
Af is whether or not the animation was finished. (0 or 1.)

I hope that helps with understanding it.

If you're new to programming, you might want to take a look at a few GE demos. But I reccomend going through all (yes, all) of the tutorials first. :)
